I've been asked over the past year to help clients find snr software engineering talent. You need to play down the "AI" rhetoric if you want to attract good people. Advertising you intend to install them into some kind of "reverse centaur" role will pretty much guarantee they won't be applying.

When we get on to modular software design, I talk about "complexity by composition" - simple parts composed into complex and sophisticated wholes, and it's the interactions between those simple parts that produce the magic. A symphony of FizzBuzzes.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Can we predict a file changing at different times for different reasons just by analysing the file, its dependencies, and what uses it?

Jason Gorman @jasongorman.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
That's dynamic analysis - analysis of things changing or the software running.

Shortcomings: - No concept of type. Roles = types. That's fixable, but needs some thought. - Not scalable: no unit of organisation (e.g. packages) - When feedback from coding changes the model, no simple reverse trip

A few more UX tweaks to my RDD Workbench after yesterday's workshop: - More straightforward responsibility assignment - Better logic about who the default sender should be on a sequence diagram, based on who has focus of control - Easier way to add return messages codemanship.co.uk/rdd/

Fact is, teams who put a little thought into those high-level contracts tend to end up with more modular designs. It's like building a clay model around a wire frame that holds the basic overall shape.
061
Jason Gorman @jasongorman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
That's the original purpose of mock objects - we go contract-first, defining how a module will be used before considering how it will work. On real-world systems, we typically end up with a small ratio of abstractions and mocks to concrete implementations - just the key high-level interactions

Jason Gorman @jasongorman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
...As the software grows, those interfaces often end up hiding a cluster of classes or modules that emerge from refactoring that aren't mocked and don't have their own dedicated tests. e.g. The Card interface might end up hiding a can of worms about payments. But design starts with its *contract*.

Jason Gorman @jasongorman.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
A common misunderstanding about the "London school" of Test-Driven Development is that every class has unit tests, and every dependency in every unit test is mocked. This, I think, comes from folks not seeing it at scale. What gets mocked typically represents roles in a high-level design...
