1/2 Ebola has reached a 7th province in Congo. A 23-year-old man traveled more than 2,000 km over about 3 weeks, passing through Rwanda and Uganda and then across Congo before dying in Sud-Ubangi. His journey shows the challenge of containing the virus as it moves along busy transport corridors.

As the Ebola outbreak unfolds in the DRC, we explored different control scenarios: Improved case detection has the largest impact, but even a moderately effective vaccine could markedly reduce mortality, either through ring or community vaccination. 👉https://tinyurl.com/37ssjdvm

I’m reading Jason Gale’s book After Covid: The Health Impacts That Will Last Generations; and yes
thankfully, they aren't dying-but the virus is targeting areas that shape cognition and personality."

Young Adults, Repeat Infections, and Compounding Risks
Even mild infections have been linked to difficulty concentrating and processing information among young adults. These cognitive problems can persist and often worsen after physical or mental ex-ertion, making it harder for people to work, socialize, or return to school.
A 2024 study by the Patient-Led Research Collaborative found that repeat infections further erode the protective effects of vaccines and increase the risk of severe fatigue, postexertional malaise, and other Long Covid symptoms, findings that mirror earlier work by epidemiologist Ziyad Al-Aly.27 "This is my biggest concern, particularly for younger people," Beckman said. "Each infection raises the risk of Long Covid. What's frustrating for me and a lot of scientists is that it doesn't feel like leadership is listening. We're going to pay the price in a few years. It's definitely cumulative."
Most of the damage is invisible-no limp, no scar, just the sense that something has changed. A word that won't come. A name that slips away. A sharpness that used to be there. For researchers like Beckman, the question now isn't whether Covid affects the brain but how many people are living with the aftermath, unaware of what was lost.Picture of the book After Covid by Jason Gale

4/5 A silver lining of that characteristic could be that it provides a wider window for antivirals to work. Indeed, Levine should that remdesivir had better activity against Bundibugyo than Zaire in her lab studies. @who.int -sponsored trials are underway to test that in Ebola patients + contacts.

Jason Gale @jasongale.bsky.social · 18/07/2026
3/ That finding squares with what some clinicians are calling 'Walking Ebola' -- Bundi patients who are sick enough to spread the virus but not so unwell to stop them moving around in their communities, contributing to the virus's explosive spread.

2/ 8 years ago, Corri Levine began studying Bundibugyo virus for her PhD at @utmbhealth.bsky.social under the guidance of Tom Geisbert and Susan McLellan. Levine found Bundi grew slower in cells than Zaire virus, suggesting it might also cause slower disease progression.

KINSHASA: A deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has spread to a fourth province, meaning the country's entire northeast – home to around 15 million people – is now affected.

1/4 As #Ebola's footprint widens in eastern Congo, attention is also turning to South Sudan. Study last week estimated ~70% chance of x-border spread. Samantha Nutt of War Child told me conflict, displacement + weakened health services have left region unusually vulnerable.

Jason Gale @jasongale.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
5/ Perhaps the biggest lesson from these sitreps is that both things can be true: • response is improving operationally; • outbreak remains far from over. Better surveillance, more contact tracing and expanded treatment capacity are encouraging, but transmission remains concentrated around Bunia.
010
Jason Gale @jasongale.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
4/ But treatment centers remain under ⬆️ pressure. 100s of confirmed and suspected patients occupy isolation beds, while dozens of new admissions continue almost daily. The outbreak is no longer spreading into new health zones as rapidly, but it is still generating a substantial clinical workload.
110
Jason Gale @jasongale.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
3/ One encouraging trend is contact tracing. Thousands more contacts are now being followed each day than a month ago, and responders are successfully reaching a much larger share of them. That's one of the clearest signs the response is scaling up.
110
Jason Gale @jasongale.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
2/ The outbreak is now heavily concentrated around Bunia, Mongbwalu and Rwampara in Ituri province. More than 1,200 confirmed cases have been reported, making this the largest Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak ever recorded (by a factor 10).
