I was a bit unsure because my post was the one replied to and who doesn't know relleno? but decided to act as 代理Google just in case :)

Ended up taking a longer lunch than normal, made it back in time for an afternoon meeting, and churned through a bunch of smallish tasks and requests. Although I'm cooked and I don't know why. This wasn't a hard week.

It's usually a roasted, peeled pepper (pasilla, poblano or anaheim pepper, about 15-20cm long, 3-5cm diameter near the top before cutting) with cheese, and sometimes either meat or dried fruit and nuts, depending on region/family preferences. Coated with a meringue-like egg batter and fried.

As a kid who hated cigarette smoke, oddly enough I never had the same hostility to pipe or cigar smoke as a kid.

Froward Jason @jason.jagaimo.com · 02/10/2026

I was kind of lucky my mom had mostly stopped smoking by junior high. Father was out of the picture by then and my stepfather was only into occasional weed or sometimes pipe tobacco, which he mostly did alone in the master bedroom.

Growing up as a 70s kid in the west coast meant being around a lot of second-hand smoke. My parents used to light up cigarettes most anytime they were lounging in the living room, especially with company. My aunts and uncles would pass joints around my aunt's living room when she was "watching" us.

Pretty sure the themes were meant to be universal, even if like everything it came from a particularly cultural context. And it was set in space so it was automatically cool.

Ah yes, that famously "WOKE" 1979-1981 period, when our parents, aunts, and uncles were smoking right next to us on the same couch, sexual harrassment was a team sport, and racial slurs were just casually tossed about even in the coastal cities. I had no idea Star Blazers was Japanese as a kid.

Has OSHA been thrown to the scrap heap of DOGE history? Because that's the only way this works. I've stood for a good portion of the 10-14 hour days I was working 6+ day weeks and it may have permanently damaged my knees and feet. This is no fitness test. Bodies are not made for standing all day.

Having a hard time motivating myself this morning. An 11am meeting is the only thing that is motivating me to shower and get dressed. I don't usually even turn on the camera for this call. But I do feel odd starting work without at least showering.

Ah, found it. My estimate was shy by a couple hundred yen though so it's a good thing I double-checked.

Trying to wrap up invoicing for my main client and hit a weird quirk: I cannot find the credit card transaction line item for the e-Visa application to Vietnam. Nothing around that date with a similar value. Wanted to make sure my USD/JPY currency calculation matches the card. But no luck.

Main consulting contract officially renewed with a 112.5 hour/month estimate, so I should be able to start seeing some cash flow positivity again (I've been drawing a bit more from money I previously lent to the company than is sustainable, so this is good if I can actually work that much).

I'm mostly using the excercise bicycle and doing just enough weight training to try to restore some strength lost over the last ~2 years of neglect. I have had some knee/foot pain for almost 3 years that I'm trying not to re-aggravate, though, so I'm likely going to top out at much lower weights.

130

Froward Jason @jason.jagaimo.com · 29/09/2026

Surprisingly less achy today than usual after recent weight training workouts. Though I guess the actual impact could be delayed until tomorrow. Technically not doing very heavy weights yet though, and less than my old standard routine.

They decided there was a chance we'd need to revisit the sprint plan and possibly even cancel or delay the first one. I can't decide if I should be pleased or if I should be very uncomfortable.

My original skepticism was expressed badly ("I don't know if it's correct or not because it's not backed by tests, but it seems both overly complex and inadequate") and I eventually broke down specific issues. A meeting on Friday helped the light bulb turn on on my client's side.

Froward Jason @jason.jagaimo.com · 28/09/2026

My skepticism a couple of weeks ago about a complex database schema that 1) wasn't test-driven development in spite of the vendor saying that that's how they do things 2) doesn't+can't support things implied by recent UI mockups (among other problems) has culminated in blowing up this week's kickoff

There's an emerging specialty of using the query for populating the context effectively using vector search/embeddings (RAG) and I guess that's a value-added service, but I still don't fully understand how that can work as a long-term business model.

Froward Jason @jason.jagaimo.com · 24/09/2026

Ironically a common "tell" is the technically not incorrect classroom-style volunteered "私は東京から来ました" before you even get to that; while I can't say I never see that pattern with native Japanese, most Japanese introducing themselves to other Japanese use constructions involving 出身 or 在住.

040

Froward Jason @jason.jagaimo.com · 24/09/2026

I'm starting to be surprised at how quickly I can detect non-native Japanese patterns on social media. I'll often see something that's technically grammatically correct but feels every so slightly out-of-place for the situation, or just too textbook. Always tempted to ask 出身はどこですか？in those cases.

Was hoping to make it to @nerdnitetokyo.bsky.social tonight but I have just enough of a lingering cough and congestion from the cold that started last week during my trip to Hanoi that I'm probably better off not risking spreading whatever I have. At least I'm no longer achy and sleepy.

The Milquetoast "I don't do politics" position is exposed for what it is with Ed Sheeran's collapsing tour. He could have had some principles, and lost the tour because of right wing censorship. Instead he went with no principles, and now he's losing it because the other artists do.

I had this little cryptic error message in Powershell about a missing command just after posting the above and command-completion stopped working. Since I rely on command completion to start my Azure VM I thought, "I dunno, maybe reboot?" I rarely reboot to solve problems on my Mac.

When I mistype my password the feedback is (usually) instant, but it's completely unpredictable whether my correctly-entered password will actually unlock the piece of shit.

Microsoft Windows is so much fun. Every time my screen is locked, I get to play this little low-stakes mini-lottery where I get to guess how many seconds it'll take after entering my password before my screen finally unlocks, or randomly makes me to enter my password again and play another round.

In 1991 or so I took an MIT purity test that asked me if I'd ever had oral sex with myself while assuring me it was within the realm of feasibility and I am pretty sure that test is responsible for this image.

Caught a cold in Hanoi that seems to be getting nastier day by day (though today feels like an inflection point and maybe tomorrow will be ok). I'm supposed to be onsite at my Japanese client office tomorrow but if shit feels even a tiny bit bad in the morning I'll abort.

I'm a full on nerd and the only scifi books I really appreciated until recently was Douglas Adams (aside from normie Star Wars and Star Trek media). Not taking itself too seriously made Adams way more appealing. (Fantasy, less so. Unless you count heroes saving democracy which is high fantasy now)

New word of the day (to me): 洗い出し. The parts are familiar, the combination new. Used in the context リスク洗い出し and パターン, so I take it as ”discovery" in the sense of "teasing out" in both cases, or "identifying risks" in a more pedestrian sense. It comes from a physical metaphor (stone/woodworking)

I'm in a Japanese hotel chain in Hanoi and, upon checkin all the services were explained in Japanese to my peers. I had a brief question at the same desk this morning, based on yesterday's pattern I led with Japanese. Staff asked me if I could speak English. There are signs of Japanese management:

No smoking, no durian: warning sign in my hotel room.

There's a woman on my train wearing a t-shirt with a taxi and the words "Korben Dallas Taxi Service" and I want to chant "Leeloo Dallas Multipass" so badly right now. She'd probably appreciate it. But the rest of the train would probably be thinking "weirdo foreigners" if I went there.

My older son's birthday is tomorrow, but I'll be in Hanoi this week, so I made burgers, fries and (homemade) onion rings. It turns out one onion produces a massive amount of onion rings, something I'd forgotten. Anyway it's a good thing I went to the gym twice on the weekend.

I've been juggling two laptop AC adapters with my daily trek to the coworking space and thought maybe switching to a single 200w bank would simplify my work backpack situation. Unfortunately only saves about 10 grams. But less unwieldy. And I can leave some smaller backup USB wall warts at home.

Went to a video-focused tech event tonight, a bit orthogonal to my wheelhouse, although I've done some work in that space (not entirely competently). Had a little inspiration to revisit a problem I abandoned years ago. Maybe time to build a little proof-of-concept.
