It's usually a roasted, peeled pepper (pasilla, poblano or anaheim pepper, about 15-20cm long, 3-5cm diameter near the top before cutting) with cheese, and sometimes either meat or dried fruit and nuts, depending on region/family preferences. Coated with a meringue-like egg batter and fried.

I'm in a Japanese hotel chain in Hanoi and, upon checkin all the services were explained in Japanese to my peers. I had a brief question at the same desk this morning, based on yesterday's pattern I led with Japanese. Staff asked me if I could speak English. There are signs of Japanese management:
No smoking, no durian: warning sign in my hotel room.

I've been juggling two laptop AC adapters with my daily trek to the coworking space and thought maybe switching to a single 200w bank would simplify my work backpack situation. Unfortunately only saves about 10 grams. But less unwieldy. And I can leave some smaller backup USB wall warts at home.

One thing that's struck me in this Korea trip is how many safety alerts I've been getting. Most have been routine and repetitive (without the loud panic klaxons I get in Japan), usually about hot weather risks. Just as I returned to my hotel neighborhood I got this one. Would be useful in Japan.

I know I wrote this on the bad place, sorry. When I'm being pessimistic about humanity, being right actually doesn't feel good.
In a Twitter post about cyclospora by my JasnTru account over on the bad place:

If it's anything like Corona, pretty soon people are going to be calling you un-American for trying to avoid catching it and there will be advocates that sound a lot like the raw milk people

In 2018 I "splurged" by buying a pour (or two maybe?) of Hibiki 17 at 1500 yen/glass, which is practically the price of a well pour in Seattle now. The per bottle price _at the restaurant_ (Hibiki Shinagawa)was a mere 22,000 yen. It goes for something like 70,000 yen/bottle now in scalperland? Yikes

Uber Eats running an ad featuring a photo from my own shop to promote signing up for Uber Eats is a bit surreal. (Also makes me wonder how well buried that was in the merchant terms & conditions)
An ad for 1000 yen off one's first UberEats order featuring a blueberry streusel cake that I baked about a year ago. We briefly used it as a hero image when we started because Uber Eats Japan wanted a particular aspect ratio and that was the closest item they saw on our Instagram.

I went to a pan-african bar in Jiyugaoka tonight. I think the owner is Ethiopian. The baseline spice level is super satisfying and the herby chili sauce was great. Apparently he lives near me and bought bread at my shop a week or two ago. He advised me to pick 4 nearby bars to drink at. Marketing.

Looking at the actual sales data for the year (excluding delivery services like Uber) I was surprised by two things: our sales are more evenly distributed throughout the day than I thought , and Wednesdays average only slightly less busier than Thursdays and Fridays (recently it feels much worse).
chart showing relative sales volume by time of day, peaking at 12pm, but only slightly declining, with a modest boost at 3pm, and only significantly dropping off after 7pm, which is our usual closing hour.Chart showing Saturday and Sunday as peak sales days, with Friday in 3rd place, followed by Thursday and Friday. Mondays and Tuesdays ar at a bit under half what the weekends look like; however, we're usually closed on Tuesdays (previously Mondays) aside from an occasional bread clearance sale.

For my birthday, the kids came to my shop with Hiromi. I made ridiculous oversized burgers (163g), some with smoked bacon (plus one veg version with ganmodoki). I was testing some roasted potato and soufflé sweet potato recipes in my commercial oven, and everything but the chicken ended uo as sides.

Spotted a pair of giant (for Japan) pumpkins a bit over a week ago at Marui. Kept planning to tell my wife but repeatedly forgot. She came and helped at the shop today and I remembered. Both were still there. 780 yen. Probably a better deal than we could get in the US without a drive to a farm.

Don't think I've ever had this problem before. Plugged in hand mixer. Big popping noise. Set it down on my scale instead of the stainless steel counter refrigerator. Another popping noise (capacitance or residual short). Instantly the cable self-severed. 2000 yen doesn't buy durability I guess

Love shallots. Easier to find young shallots than the bulbs in Japan. But they do exist. I used to get'em around $4/lb (9/kg or 1400 yen/kilo at current exchange rates in Seattle. So it feels expensive but maybe not so different? I used to joke "always buy the shallots" to a French friend in Japan
