Some traditions must be upheld. It's mandatory.
It's gotta be NodeConf.eu

Way overdue but Node.js is finally getting a `--process-timeout=N` cli flag that will force the process to exit with an explanation of why it was open. github.com/nodejs/node/...

Ok, so question ... if you could run a warmed node.js as a daemon process listening on either a local domain or TCP socket and dispatch scripts to it if it mean cutting the cold start time in half for scripts would that be useful? I've been playing with this for a while now...

My preferred debugging technique has always been printf/console.log ... I've been a big fan of the logpoint feature that chrome devtools added that uses conditional breakpoints to inject logging without actually having to change the code. I wanted to experiment to see how it could work in Node.js...

Holding down the floor is serious business. Here it takes three or four at once to accomplish it. The fact that Watson holds it down all by himself is truly impressive.
Adorable dogs.

Lots of people have been asking me about my dogs when I attend conferences. Since so many people have shown they care, I had stickers made! These will likely be making an appearance at @renderatl.com

32 parallel server instances, with reusePort=2, simple hello world benchmark on localhost (h2load to node.js quic).. roughly 2 million http3 req/s ... not a bad result. No errors, no memory leaks, no crashes. That's enough perf tuning for the day.

One thing I don't really talk about much is the fact that my oldest son (now 26) is autistic. He's still working on figuring the world out. He's needing to do his taxes and just sent me this. Which struck me as so pure and innocent and honest that I had to share.
A message from my autistic son about not understanding how to file taxes, "Marvel and Transformers are a lot more fun, lol. I can understand those better. Lol. My ear is ringing for some reason"

This sits along side easily with the existing Node.js streams and web streams. It's still experimental but I updated the `FileHandle` API in `fs/promises` to support it as an additional option for reading and writing to files. The fun bit are the performance numbers:

Hey, @rauchg.blue ... As one of those Node.js core developers you're mentioning here... I'd appreciate it if you'd keep me out of this squabble. You've no idea what I want and I've got nothing to do with this conversation. I happen to believe in both Node.js AND Workers, which is why I work on both
G. Rauch: "Cloudflare’s mission is to fork the entire developer ecosystem and destroy open source.

Vinext was an excuse to swindle developers into using their proprietary runtimes instead of
@nodejs
. It shipped with 10 vulnerabilities that they cheerfully handed to a .gov website.

Now they’ve done it again. They can’t run just-bash, because it’s open source software that runs on
@nodejs
. It has to work “at the edge”, which is a thing no one wants (We learned the hard way… Not even the Node core developers they hired to work on Workers instead want it!)"

For the browser side... the benchmarks are a bit different but here's how it stacks up against chromium's impl of web streams:
020
James Snell @jasnell.me · 03/03/2026
Fixed up some perf issues and benchmark bugs in the new-streams reference impl ... some highlights running comparisons on @nodejs.org @deno.land and @bun.sh ... note each column is just looking at the one runtime, not comparing runtimes against each other ...

James Snell @jasnell.me · 27/02/2026
... and Bun's numbers...
120
James Snell @jasnell.me · 27/02/2026
... Obviously, take all the usual "Benchmarks are usually fundamentally flawed" caveats into consideration when looking at those numbers. Also, these are the numbers when checked against Node.js. What do the numbers with Deno and Bun look like? Here are Deno's numbers for the same benchmarks:
110
James Snell @jasnell.me · 27/02/2026
One bit that's worth emphasizing more on the new streams api discussion is the absolute cost of the current web streams model. Node.js' web streams impl has never been perf optimized but 90x faster is still ... something ...

If you know what this is, and if you've ever had to get one unjammed before, congratulate me. This was perhaps one of the worst ones I've ever seen. Literally broke three separate pitman pullers before we managed to actually get it broken free. Ultimately required torching, a puller, and a fork...
