New party trick: whenever someone starts arguing AGI is imminent, shout "I refute it thus!" and show them Bergman's PERSONA.
A still from Bergman's persona: a black and white still of a boy wearing glasses and holding up his right hand against a screen that shows a blurry face of a woman.

Are you feeling anxious? I wouldn’t be surprised if you are. AI is upending our work — and our identities, too. Greg Petroff and I have been discussing what we’re hearing from design and product leaders.

Much of what passes for ‘news’ is more about stoking desire than informing. 👀

In my latest experiment in using AI for information architecture, I used Claude Code to suggest possible categorization schemes for my blog. The results are promising — check it out: jarango.com/2025/07/01/u... Photo by Casey Horner on Unsplash #InformationArchitecture #ContentManagement #AI

Anthropomorphizing much? Trying out Claude Code.

The most brutal epilogue I’ve ever read.
Screenshot from an ebook of The Consolation of Philosophy. It reads: “Epilogue - Within a short time of writing The Consolation of Philosophy, Boethius died by a cruel death. As to the manner of his death there is some uncertainty. According to one account, he was cut down by the swords of the soldiers before the very judgment seat of Theodoric; according to another, a cord was first fastened round his forehead, and tightened till “his eyes started”; he was then killed with a club.”

Why read about things that happened a long time ago? Because they help us grok what’s happening now. In my latest “Learning by Note” newsletter, I reflect on timeless — and ominous — insights into power from Ancient Rome. www.learningbynote.com/p/humanities...

It's hard to believe that I've already completed ten weeks in the humanities crash course. On this week, I read six classic Greek dramas, heard the blues, and saw a movie starring the late, great Gene Hackman. How do they connect? Read on to find out. 👇 www.learningbynote.com/p/humanities...

Many platforms let humans prompt AIs. LinkedIn uses AI to prompt humans.

A screenshot of a macOS application menu for Emacs. The menu includes the following options:

	•	About Emacs
	•	Settings… (with the keyboard shortcut ⌘,)
	•	Services (with a submenu arrow)
	•	Hide Emacs (with the keyboard shortcut ⌘H)
	•	Hide Others (highlighted in purple, with the keyboard shortcut ⌥⌘H)
	•	Quit Emacs (with the keyboard shortcut ⌘Q)

The highlighted option, “Hide Others,” allows the user to hide all other applications except Emacs.

Among other things, having LLMs that can "read" images means there is absolutely no excuse ever again for including images in HTML without rich and relevant ALT descriptions.
