Also, packages can be multi-targeted (and they are), so what does that mean e.g. for API and behavior compatibility if running on an older runtime? also ran into this with Aspire depending on STS (9) .NET version, while we were still on LTS (8)

it is a bit tricky, for various reasons. there can be binary or behavior compatibility issues in newer .net version that might prevent you from updating. what confuses also is, should a major dependency bump be considered a major semver bump (for thirdparty packages). or is it “ok” in a minor patch

Published a new tool that lets you record all .NET exceptions system-wide in all processes: github.com/KirillOsenko... dotnet tool update -g beetle It records AllExceptions.beetle, which is like a binlog for exceptions. There's also an MCP that can read and analyze .beetle files.

An unaccounted for part of the economy is how much young people virulently hate AI, despite how aggressively it's being forced on them. They realize it's making their friends dumber and ruining the world and they want nothing to do with it. From the Penn student paper: www.thedp.com/article/2026...

Goldman Sachs reports that 300 million full-time jobs could be replaced by AI by 2030. Labor turnover is high and hiring has slowed. 71% of Americans worry that AI will cause permanent job loss. As young people about to enter the workforce for the first time, the fear of unemployment is understandable, but we cannot save ourselves with the very tool that is putting us at risk.

The irony is that as Penn pours endless money and energy into AI advancement in its attempt to get ahead, the University is only quickening its own demise. AI cannot coexist with education — it can only degrade it. As technology advances and workers are replaced by machines, schools are some of the only places we have left to explore and wrestle with human thought. With our own university leading the charge, AI is now corrupting those few sacred spaces and leaving us with nowhere to engage in true scholarship.

Editorials represent the majority view of members of The Daily Pennsylvanian Editorial Board who meet regularly to discuss issues relevant to the Penn community. This body is led by Editorial Board Chair Jack Lakis and is entirely separate from the newsroom. Questions or comments should be directed to letters@thedp.com.

Here's my enormous round-up of everything we learned about LLMs in 2025 - the third in my annual series of reviews of the past twelve months simonwillison.net/2025/Dec/31/... This year it's divided into 26 sections! This is the table of contents:

The year of “reasoning”
The year of agents
The year of coding agents and Claude Code
The year of LLMs on the command-line
The year of YOLO and the Normalization of Deviance
The year of $200/month subscriptions
The year of top-ranked Chinese open weight models
The year of long tasks
The year of prompt-driven image editing
The year models won gold in academic competitions
The year that Llama lost its way
The year that OpenAI lost their lead
The year of Gemini
The year of pelicans riding bicycles
The year I built 110 tools
The year of the snitch!
The year of vibe coding
The (only?) year of MCP
The year of alarmingly AI-enabled browsers
The year of the lethal trifecta
The year of programming on my phone
The year of conformance suites
The year local models got good, but cloud models got even better
The year of slop
The year that data centers got extremely unpopular
My own words of the year
That’s a wrap for 2025

MSBuild tip: if you're working with binlogs, set the environment variable MSBuildLogPropertyTracking=15. It enables logging of where each property was initially assigned from during evaluation and lights up more features in the binlog viewer.

screenshot of MSBuild binlog viewer on the Properties and Items tab, the query shows `$property "OutputPath" "UseArtifactsOutput"`

results show a tree where each assignment to OutputPath is highlighted, with the actual value being displayed where an assignment was made

Trying to measure coding productivity is, and always will be, a fool's errand. Why? Because I can go for a walk then take a shower and have an idea, then write a single line of code that fixes everything I was working on. Immense productivity, but by most metrics I didn't do anything at all.

AI PRs where the author doesn't have an understanding of the system shift the burden of understanding onto the reviewer. So now it's on the reviewer to gain an understanding of this area to either confirm or refute. The author saved time at the expense of the reviewer.
