From Working Designs. The geniuses famous for putting shit like this into JRPGs. The Saturn was dead long before they'd finished tling Rayearth and it was the last non-JP game released. They had literally nothing to lose.

The big thing is that the first half of Rayearth is all forward momentum with plot and character movement happening literally every fight and then the second half has glacial pacing. I have heard that Nova massively improves this.

I adore the first half of the manga. The second half of the manga is the harder sell, and it's when they give Hikaru uh... well I'm sure you've seen from SRW. I can defend that in the context of the manga, but the second half has other problems.

The best adaptation is actually the Saturn game, though it flubs the twist a little and you have to deal with the Working Designs script. It's all Umi dialogue because of course it's all Umi dialogue.

Thoroughly average sadly. Elevated whenever Umi is on screen because the animators *really* like her. It deviates from the manga in a few key ways that grind my gears, especially at the ending of part 1. I actually haven't seen the second half of the anime and only know about Nova through osmosis.

lmao yeah in the manga she's A Creature who is moved entirely by impulse deliberately meant to invoke a shonen protagonist which balanced her out with Umi and Fuu being a lot more complex. In the old anime I'd say she's characterized by insecurity and self-reflectiveness. Think Hitomi Escalflowne.

This is a funny disconnect where it's been lost in translation because Hikaru *does* act a lot more boyish in the manga... but it's wayyyy more faithful than the first anime where her personality has all the rough edges shaven off so she can be the easy self insert for a young female audience.

I love the scene between the teddies here so much. Their reactions are just so fundamentally empathetic and kind. It's easy to imagine a version where Yumeta is pushed to Be Better by criticism and hurt feelings and not compassion and a personal drive for it.

That wasn't exactly a great first episode, and it is EXTREMELY difficult to take Ayane Sakura as Hikaru seriously (what the fuck kind of decison was that????) but it's Rayearth and as the rare person who likes all of Rayearth, it's nice to be home.
