“The effect of humid heat on outdoor workers costs India the equivalent of 7% of GDP each year.” Poorer neighborhoods in Mumbai can be 5° hotter than rich ones next door.
Map of Mumbai showing land surface temperature in October, with poorer slums much hotter than affluent suburbs next door. Screenshot of an Economist article, the text reads: “The problem is most acute in cities, where the poor squeeze tightly under tin roofs. Many run micro-businesses from home, frying snacks for sale or operating machines that generate yet more heat. Slums are much hotter than richer areas, which have more shade and open space. Temperatures in October in Dharavi, a Mumbai slum that squashes im people into 2.4 square kilometres, are five degrees higher than in Matunga, a posher suburb next door (see map). The effect of humid heat on outdoor workers costs India the equivalent of 7% of GDP each year, estimates Luke Parsons of Duke University.” The last two sentences are highlighted.

Hospital staff is structurally overburdened. Two solutions for nursing staff in Germany are a minimum nurse-to-patient ratio and the separate financing of nursing care outside the DRG system. Are there studies examining these measures? What solutions exist for medical staff? #healtheconomics

Our new paper also provides empirical evidence how much wind power capacity could be squeezed into on km2 historically. Might be helpful for energy modellers who have to make assumptions regarding the land requirements for wind power deployment. 🔌💡
