Have lived my entire adult life outside of California and it still comes through loud and clear on the dialect quiz. Childhood linguistic settings are really something:
List of most and least similar cities from dialect quiz -- most similar are San Francisco, Los Angeles and Albuquerque and least similar are Boston, Portland, Maine and NYC.map of the United States with more dialect similarity in the west and less in the east, especially northeast.

This
SENTENCE

It's as if you'd woken in a locked cell and found
in your pocket a slip of paper, and on it a single sentence
in a language you don't know.

And you'd be sure this sentence was the key to your
life. Also to this cell.

And you'd spend years trying to decipher the sentence,
until finally you'd understand it. But after a while
you'd realize you got it wrong, and the sentence meant
something else entirely. And so you'd have two sentences.

Then three, and four, and ten, until you'd created a new language.

And in that language you'd write the novel of your life.
And once you'd reached old age you'd notice the door of the cell
was open. You'd go out into the world. You'd walk the length and
       breadth of it,

until in the shade of a massive tree you'd yearn
for that one single sentence in a language you don't know.

                                                      --Tadeusz Dąbrowski

Five years ago my daughter's kindergarten teacher had the kids make leprechaun traps at school to take home, and this nightmare "custom" has been in our lives ever since, as if we didn't already have enough occasions on which we have to remember to buy candy or something.

Yes! It was very striking how social media was flooded with anti-Talarico talking points from allegedly progressive accounts the instant he won the primary. A lot of it seemed like they'd just copy-pasted his name into anti-Kamala stuff from 2024, then sprinkled on "he's a white male Christian!"

It was also really striking that the other event participants (e.g. Franziska Giffey, who introduced her) kept trying to emphasize a women-in-politics angle to AOC's story and AOC seemed very uninterested in this framing and kept saying that her primary lens was class and economic injustice.

Another interesting thing was that several young (early 20s) audience members said they were running for Berlin city council and she was their inspiration. I hadn't known she had that kind of presence among young Germans.

My kids and I attended this AOC event last night in Berlin. She is very charismatic in person! We were sitting next to some paramedics who were there at the venue's behest just in case of an emergency, not out of any interest in AOC, and they loved this bit about not letting ICE agents use bathrooms

This was my (late 70s) experience too -- kids a few years older than me were scary/mean as hell, kids a few years younger were totally chill, my own cohort was a mix. The way kids were raised changed RADICALLY from about 1975 to 1990, I think it's really underrated as a social shift of that era.

When telling Americans about the year of (legally mandated, in no way contingent on any supervisor's whim) parental leave I received in Germany, one of the most common responses I got was along the lines of "wow, that was so awesome of your boss to give you that! What an inspiring, amazing boss!"

Even though there was a moral panic about jazz in the 1920s that was VERY MUCH like the 80s/09s moral panics about rap and heavy metal! I mean, the whole reason US kids had to learn square dancing in school gym class for decades was as counter programming to the "harmful" influence of jazz.

Some really excellent writing and reporting here on the monstrous absurdity of ICE in New Orleans.
Excerpt from linked article: "even stipulating that America is a nation of immigrants, and that the persecution of immigrants is an insult to our history wherever it occurs in this land, it must still be said that launching a violent government purge of immigrants is even more ludicrously monstrous when it happens in New Orleans. In New Orleans! A city that for centuries has collected drifters from Europe and dreamers from the Caribbean and schemers from Central America and prisoners from Africa, and has molded all their descendants into a culture unmatched anywhere else in this plastic country."

This reminds me of a study I read about that found what people who hid Jews from the Nazis in WWII had in common, across diff't countries, was that most were people whose neighbors found them disagreeable & mildly unpleasant. Moral courage seems to negatively correlate with likeability.
