I think these charts are worth keeping in mind at the same time. 1. When we're talking about the typical person, wealth is largely a lifecycle phenomenon. 2. When we're talking about wealth, the typical person is largely a rounding error.
Line chart of median household net worth by age for Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers and Silent, in 2025 dollars on a log scale. At most ages, each younger generation is at or above the older ones. Millennials trail until about 30, then reach about $200K by 40. Boomers peak near $450K in their 70s. Data: Fed SCF.Six bar charts of the share of net worth held by each wealth decile within age groups, 2025. In every group, the top 10% holds 60–70% and the bottom half holds roughly 0–3%. Under-35s are the least concentrated at the top (60%), and their poorest decile is negative (−4%). Data: SCF.

Anthropomorphizing cat faces really doesn't work. This sweetheart is purring and about to learn forward asking for scritches, but she looks like she'll cut you. (She did nail me with a smart claw earlier today, but she wasn't glaring at me at the time.)

When the box is small, and your sister squashes it on top of you.
Ilya is inside the box, peering out of the end. He's a tabby with white markings. Parker has her front paws on the box, squashing it down onto his head. She's white, with dark grey splotches on her head and a fluffy grey tail. She is looking at the camera with a very serious expression.

I'm taking my "Norway's wealth tax didn't reduce tax revenue" victory lap.
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021–2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an “exodus” of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times, 2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners’ firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners’ savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms. Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms, nor is there any evidence that the reform induced more bankruptcies. ...

There's a trope I see in novels where a character who is overwhelmed goes into a bathroom and splashes cold water on their face -- often at a bar or restaurant. Do people actually do this? There are flimsy paper towels, at best, for drying your face. You're sure to get water on your shirt, too.
