George Saunders on AI: "Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside?"

Has your relationship to AI changed since it was first released as a widely accessible consumer product?

No. Very early on, I did that thing where I asked AI to generate some text in my voice, and the result was so dispiriting—so dull and literal—that I lost interest. I don’t have any AI products and don’t want any. I would, in fact, pay not to have them and would pay extra to stop them from sneakily titrating themselves into existing products, like, for example, probably, the likely forthcoming AI fork that assesses your angle of food-entry and tells you how efficiently you’re eating compared to others in your demographic and so on.

How does George Saunders—the person, not the writer—use AI day to day?

He tries to avoid it, although he sometimes screws up by forgetting to add “- ai” in his searches. I don’t consider myself qualified to talk about the use of AI in medicine or science or any of that. But in writing I find it completely unappealing.

Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.

Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

"I was in a hurry and used AI. Oops, sorry it was all wrong." Darlings. Sweethearts. Listen to me. If you're in a creative field and do this, you have no excuse. None. Especially now. The gen AI stole from YOU. The gen AI stole from your FRIENDS. It is wrong a lot! You should know and do better.

Lady with a Fan. Gustav Klimt. 1917. Private Collection.
Austrian painter Klimt was known for symbolism and art nouveau. Here against a yellow background of birds and flowers, stands a pretty woman with dark hair, a dress that exposes one shoulder and a fan in her hand. She looks away and not directly at the artist.

In light of the devastating news surrounding the passing of Daveigh Chase, I wanted to pay respects to her by drawing Chihiro from Spirited Away which she voiced in the English dub. You will always be in our hearts and never will you be forgotten. 💐 #traditionalart #humanart #as05 #RIPDaveighChase

Today, in light of the recent devestating news of the passing of Daveigh Chase, I wanted to draw this sketch of Chihiro from Spirited Away of which she voiced her in the English dub.

In all of my years, I've never seen Spirited Away other than Lilo and Stitch, but now even if I want to see the movie right now after years of sleeping out on it...

I think it's an important reminder that life is far too short for each of us and Daveigh was an integral part of our childhood many of us will never forget after hearing the terrible loss at only just 35 years old. Life always is running away from us every second and each of us miss out on why we live through everyday but it's important to look after those we care about even if we don't know some people who never got the chance to know us.

Thank you for everything, Daveigh.

Happy Pride to this Caravaggio self-portrait that made one man so gay he had to go to the hospital

Caravaggio's Baccus painting, featuring a lush fruity spread and leaves bedecking a pasty twink who only works out his arms

Article screenshot that says:

The most extreme examples of
Stendhal syndrome share a sensation of
self-fragmentation. Magherini
describes the case of a 53-year-old
German man who was hospitalized
after repeatedly viewing Caravaggio's
Bacchus at Uffizi Gallery. The patient
felt "an attraction closer and closer to
an intimate sexual arousal of
ambiguous nature that invaded him
and made him feel good and bad."
Unmoored and distressed, he sought
medical attention. After treating the
subject's initial episode, Magherini
writes that he came to recognize his
latent homosexuality. Another case...
