It’s 3rd century Rome, and these are your chariot teams in the Circus Maximus: factio veneta (Blues), factio prasina (Greens), and factio russata (Reds) - missing: factio albata, the Whites. These mosaic panels show each team winning the victor’s palm branch. 🏺 1/ 📸 me #MuseoArqueológicoNacional
A mosaic panel (emblema) depicting a circus scene. Enclosed within a border of black and white dentils is a quadriga (four-horse chariot) facing left. The horses - the outer funales and the inner iugales (yoked to the chariot pole) - are rearing up on their hindquarters with their forelegs raised. They are adorned with palm fronds on their heads and triangular amulets around their necks. Standing in the chariot's box is the victorious charioteer; smiling, he holds the reins and a palm of victory in his left hand, while his raised right hand holds a whip. He wears a blue tunic, indicating his membership in the factio veneta, or the "Blues" team. The iubilator, also in the chariot, raises his hand to acclaim the victor. In front of the quadriga, a sparsor holds the head of the funalis horse with one hand and an amphora with the other. He is poised to perform the sparsio, watering the horses that have just competed in the race. A small amphora sits on the ground, perhaps to enhance the sense of perspective or to serve the sparsor in his task.

The factio veneta was linked to the sky, the sea, and autumn, enjoying heavy imperial and public support.A quadriga (four-horse chariot) is shown galloping to the right in this square mosaic panel - obviously cut from a much larger floor mosaic. The victorious charioteer, positioned on the left, holds a palm frond - a symbol of triumph - and a whip in his right hand; the horses' reins are wrapped around his waist. His green tunic and helmet indicate his affiliation with the factio prasina (the Greens). The iubilator (an attendant who encouraged the horses) carries a riding crop. Only the right wheel of the chariot is visible. The white background darkens at the bottom to suggest the quadriga's shadow.

The factio prasina was associated with spring or Mother Earth, sharing top popularity and intense rivalry with the Blues.Square mosaic panel depicting a quadriga (four-horse chariot) advancing head-on. Inside the chariot are the charioteer - positioned in the center, wearing racing armor and a helmet, and holding a palm of victory in his left hand - and the iubilator/jubilator (shouter/cheerleader), who holds a riding crop. Another iubilator stands outside the chariot with a whip and one hand raised, acclaiming the victor. The horses wear crescent-shaped amulets and are adorned with plumes atop their heads. Both the harnesses and the figures' clothing are rendered using glass-paste tesserae in shades of green, blue, gold, and red. The scene is framed by a border of black and white dentils.

The chariot is red, the color of the factio russata (Red faction/team) to which the racer belonged. The faction russata was traditionally dedicated to the war god Mars and the summer season.

Riton in lapislazuli e oro
Collection: Abegg-Stiftung - Achemenid Persia • 5th century
BC
Carved in the deep blue of lapislazzuli and adorned with gold details, this rhyton takes on the form of a powerful caprid, depicted in a collected pose as the body of the vase rises behind its shoulders. The contrast between the intense stone and the luster of gold returns an object of extraordinary elegance, designed to combine ritual function and strong visual impact.
Rhyta like this were used during libations and ceremonial banquets in the royal courts of ancient Persia. The gesture of pouring and drinking became part of a symbolic choreography, in which the vessel was not just a container, but a means between the earthly power, the sacred and the natural world. The animal form indicated strength, protection and fertility, central values in the Persian imaginary.
In the Achemenian period (around 550-330 BC), luxury objects played a fundamental role in the representation of imperial power. Precious materials like lapislazzuli - imported from far-flung regions of Central Asia - and gold underscored the empire's breadth and control of trade routes. Rhyta were employed in elite ritual contexts or offered as diplomatic gifts, strengthening hierarchies, alliances and the divine legitimacy of the sovereign.

The age of the wooden remains places site about 3,000 years before the first farmers reached Central Germany. Farming communities arrived around 5,500 BCE and built permanent structures. The Arendsee finds raise questions about how much earlier people shaped their surroundings.

Bronze and its precursors, copper and tin, were really scarce in this region at the time. But surely there was plenty of good flint, bone, antler to make serviceable weapons. I wonder if someone saw this beautiful banded slate and thought wow and spent hundreds hours working creating this.
