A juvenile Northern Mockingbird with a brownish-gray back, pale whitish-gray underside with distinct dark spots and streaks on the chest and throat, and faint streaks on the back. This bird flew up onto a brown branch of a small tree with other brown branches and green leaves all around. There was a bright blue sky in the background. Seen at Parker River NWR in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

The marsh at Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Norfolk, Massachusetts was filled with tussocks covered with reddish-brown grasses and plants amid the blue water, and a Mute Swan couple with white feathers swimming on the other side. There were tall evergreen trees and other species of trees with brown trunks and red, yellow, and orange leaves around the edge of the marsh.

This bird had been calling and flying along the Concord River, then landed on a brown snag of a tree on the opposite side of the river. A Great Blue Heron with gray and dark blue body feathers and a long yellow beak, standing on a small tussock in the marsh at Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge in Maynard, Massachusetts. I almost didn't see the heron as I was walking down the nearby trail as it was standing still. The marsh was lit up by the morning sun and featured yellow, green, red and brown grasses and aquatic plants, and water with areas of yellow-green pollen and reflections of the plants.

A małe Downy Woodpecker high up in a tree with pale brown branches, and somehow hanging on the end of a tiny branch where he had been poking around looking for bugs. The bird had a black and white striped head with a red patch on the back, a white front, and dark brown/black spotted back and wings with a large white patch on the middle of the back. I shot this photo in Aperture mode, which created a blurred background of green leaves and blue sky that appear as out-of-focus points of light known as bokeh balls. The purple obedient plant, also called false dragonhead, is a native perennial in the mint family known for flowers that stay in place when bent. There were many tall stalks of the purple flowers, with green leaves all around, in the gardens at Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary in Norfolk, Massachusetts. The stalk in front was lit up by the sun and had several black and yellow bumblebees sipping nectar from the flowers.

A Savannah Sparrow running around on the gray gravel path with some green foliage on the edge, in both sunlight and shadow from the early morning sun. This bird had brown upperparts with black streaks, white underparts with thin brown streaks on the breast and flanks, a small brown crest, and a streaky face with a small yellow patch in front of the eye. This was the first one I've seen this year at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

The Pied-billed Grebe is a small and chunky waterbird. This Grebe had a dark brown back, lighter brown on the neck, underparts and flanks, short, wispy tail with bright white feathers under the tail, dark head, reddish-brown eyes with a white eye ring, and a chunky, whitish bill with a black band around the middle. The Grebe was swimming and diving in one of the ponds at Ellis Creek Wetlands in Petaluma, California. The water looks mostly green due to reflections from the green reeds that line the pond.

Washington Tower, a 62 foot tall gray granite tower at the highest point of Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This medieval style tower designed by the cemetery founders in honor of President George Washington, who was buried elsewhere. A Black-capped Chickadee features with deep black, crisp white, and soft gray feathers. They have a black cap on top of the head that extends down just past the dark brown eyes, white patches on the sides of the face, and a small black patch under the chin. Their wings and tail have dark gray/brown feathers and secondary wing feathers edged with white, and the chest is white with buffy sides. This bird was hanging onto a green leaf and looking underneath to see if there were any caterpillars. there are more green leaves and a brown stem around the bird, and a dark background with green leaves. Seen at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

This wooded path had tall trees with brown trunks, some lit up by the sun, and layers of brown branches with green leaves. There was green foliage along the edges of the brown dirt trail that was littered with reddish colored pine needles, and a peek of blue sky in the upper left. A pair of Cinnamon Teal ducks floating on the golden-brown and blue water of a pond at Ellis Creek wetlands in Petaluma, California, during the golden hour in December. The male has a vivid rusty-red body with a long black bill, red eye, and a black back and rear. The female was brown and white, with intricate buff and darker brown patterns, brown head, a dark eye with a black eye stripe, and a long black bill. There was light brown dead foliage with a reddish tint from the sun lining the edge of the pond.

A small female Blue Dasher dragonfly with large red and turquoise eyes, a yellow and brown striped thorax, an abdomen with narrow, parallel yellow streaks against a darker background, and four transparent wings. This dragonfly landed on a green leaf close to where I was walking along a trail at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts. There are more green leaves with reddish-yellow stems in the background.

A ~4" Northern Leopard Frog with a base skin color of bright green, marked with dark brown oval spots on the back and legs. Each dark spot is surrounded by a thin, pale green border. There's a white stripe along the upper jaw, and light creamy ridges down the sides of the back, and dark eyes with bronze lids. This frog was sitting in a mix of gray gravel, brown dirt, and green weeds at the corner of a walking trail at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

A male (drake) Mallard with an iridescent green head, white neck ring, chestnut-brown chest, light gray patterned flanks and back, black rear end and black tail feathers, and a yellow bill, swimming with a female (hen) Mallard with a mottled brown and tan body with a darker crown, dark stripe through the eye, and an orange bill with dark smudges. The ducks were swimming in brown, rippled water that had flowed over the banks of the nearby river into a wooded area. Seen in December at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

A juvenile Red-tailed Hawk with a reddish-brown head and back, yellow eyes, white chest and underparts, spotted brown belly band, and brown and white barred tail. The bird had an unhappy look on its face because I (and 3-4 others) were taking so many photos. It was perched on a brown branch of a tree right above the trail. There were more brown branches, red-orange buds, and a blue sky in the background. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

A small female Northern Yellow Warbler, with an unstreaked yellow front, greenish-yellow head and back with a darker tail, dark eyes with a faint eye ring, and a black beak. She was flying from tree to tree, and landed on a thin brown branch. There's a light brown tree trunk, reddish-brown branches with green leaves, and a blue sky in the background. Seen during spring migration at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

I was with a birding partner to check this brown wooden bird box on the top of a ridge, and stopped to take a photo of this pretty view. The box was at the end of a silver barbed-wire cattle fence with weathered brown posts every few feet. There were green grasses with small white flowers blowing in the breeze, leading down into green fields and a river far below. Along the skyline there was a layer of undulating hills with green and dark blue looking foliage with white mist over them. The sky was a soft blue with layers of wispy white clouds. Seen at Tolay Lake Regional Park in Petaluma, California.

A Spotted Sandpiper (without spots on its chest) was in its non-breeding plumage of a grayish-brown back and a plain white breast. This was one of two sandpipers that were standing on a small brown mud flat near the edge of the Concord River. The water was rippling slightly and had reflections of the bird, a brown branch on the left, pink and red flowers near the bottom, and many shades of green foliage and leaves that were along the shoreline. Seen at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord, Massachusetts.

This Black-necked Stilt is a slender shorebird with black-and-white plumage, long pink legs, and a thin, slightly upturned black bill. This bird was standing in dark brown mud on the edge of a man-made pond with blue and brown rippled water. There were dried up plants with light and dark brown foliage next to the bird. Seen in the month of June at Shollenberger Park in Petaluma, California.
