Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 06/10/2026Thank you! from someone who had work commitments tonight but really wanted to be watching the debate 020
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 05/10/2026The needle squeals as I jam the turntable on my podcast record player. I lift off some half-finished dreary treatise on modern fascism and frisbee it out the window. "New Books Could Kill just dropped!" 010

Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 26/09/2026The Happy Song is so obviously by a strung-out desperate parent at the end of their sleepy tether. "Ping! A submarine! Whew a helicopter! Uh... a choo choo train! Oh shit it's working, write it down!" 010
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 24/09/2026Piranesi is a delightful outlier. I'm 20% of the way through, still have absolutely no idea what this book is about, and feel pulled as of by a ratchet to keep turning the pages. Susanna Clarke is a treasure. #booksky 040

Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 17/09/2026And everyone can tell my posts aren't AI thanks to the horrendous typos and autocorrects 010
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 17/09/2026This is it, eh. In some ways I can't blame the low-cash communities I'm involved with for making slop posters. Because I have the skills to make realnpisters, but I don't have the time. And if I won't do it, who will? Still, I'd love to see less slop. Good paint job! 230
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 16/09/2026I don't think any polling companies do this because small sample sizes would lead to wildly inaccurate results. From memory there may in the past have been polling in a couple of important electorates? But that may be a memory hallucination. Best you can do is look at previous results 010

Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026If Nats win I hope they have the balls to refuse Paul Henry a ministerial portfolio, in the awareness that he's going to shoot from the hip and be un-fireable without collapsing the government. Of course, I have no faith in said testicular fortitude #nzpol 230
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026The real third gender was the friends we made along the way. 042
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026A bunch of cooker outlets like RCR and The Platform cropped up because ACT and NZF think that mainstream media are too mean to them. There's no protection there. While it is good to challenge and question the mainstream media, it is dangerous to undermine trust with untrue allegations 100
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026Is there a media problem where they squeeze Greens harder than ACT? Yes, and there are myriad reasons for that and they should be addressed. Is there a cabal of journalists conspiring to protect ACT? No, and that's not how newsrooms work. 100
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026No, I've seen your posting about this over the years and usually don't engage. Any journo or editor would jump at the chance to claim a political scalp like Seymour's. The truth is this story was never going to take him down. 100
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 14/09/2026Literally the first sentence of the article names him as former ACT Party president. Like, absolutely take your swings about headline choices but the narrative that the media is "protecting ACT" is conspiracy theory stuff. FWIW I agree there are problems with the coverage, but that's not it. 110
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Wait he actually used the term "cultural marxists"? Fucking dog whistle much? 021
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026It should be normal! I'm glad you have that access – it may extend your life. 120
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026It used to be normal to have a proactive GP who knows you. Now we call it "lucky". Soon I think we'll call it a thing of the past. 110
Reposted by Jamie SmallEleanor G @zaichishka.bsky.social · 10/09/2026My GP is amazing and she moved heaven and earth when I got sick this time last year. I think that if she hadn't been so proactive, I wouldn't have been diagnosed so quickly and my prognosis wouldn't have been as good. Pay our medical professionals what they're worth and employ more of them! 1186
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026The circular issue, right! Not enough GPs = more health issues and more referrals. More referrals means more declined Xrays, which means worse patient outcomes (and GP burnout!) 010
Reposted by Jamie SmallGreg Bond @docgregb.bsky.social · 10/09/2026This sounds familiar (though I absolutely can’t function beyond midnight). To add a small point. The answer isn’t AI or virtual consults. It is more GPs to meet the demands of an ageing, unwell population. And a work structure that doesn’t rob us of our family time & sleep just to do the job. 1156
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Yup, and I'd go one further: it's not just about who you vote for but actually emailing or talking to your politicians and saying "your policies still aren't good enough. What are you going to do to make sure your party funds GP?" 020
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026It's also the chronic conditions. This is a huge and poorly understood issue. Lots of *should* see their GP every 6 weeks to manage and touch base. But life is hard. You forget to book and then there's another 3 week wait. In the meantime a simple symptom blows out to a hospital-grade complication. 110
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Source: I work for @gpaotearoa.co.nz Also, as mentioned, my wife is a GP. 1100
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026When you read about crowded and failing hospitals, think more critically than the politicians do. Think: this is because we don't have enough GPs. #nzpol 1132
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026This article from today, and just about every article like it, are symptoms of an underfinded primary healthcare system that works its GPs into the ground. www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3610...stuff.co.nz‘I really love my job’: Why a veteran ED nurse walked awayEmergency department doctors and nurses across New Zealand describe conditions they say are unsafe 1183
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Simple answer: it's not sexy. You can't campaign on paying GPs better. You can't have a ribbon-cutting photoshoot for simple systemic fixes. GPs suffer from the gender pay gap, and from being legally/structurally blocked from unionising. Politics has a short attention span. 1151
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026It's not hard. Our GPs *want* to stay in their profession. They love it. With a little bit of political attention and care (and funding), Aotearoa could stop the GP crisis and swell the ranks. So why won't politicians commit to saving the health system from the bottom up? 1131
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026You want to save ED and hospital beds? What you need is patients in rooms with their own GP – an expert diagnostician – who knows them, can look them in the eye and talk, can physically assess them. That saves health and productivity, it saves lives, and it saves billions of #nzpol tax dollars. 1161
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026And you can't simply replace an in-person GP with telehealth, or a pharmacy visit, or a nurse appointment. Those appointment types are totally appropriate some of the time, but not as a catch-all for the people who can't see a GP. 1162
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026When there aren't enough GPs, the effects are terrible. People who cant see their GP on the day go to ED instead. Same for people who had a minor issue that blew up while they waited weeks for an appointment. Chronic health conditions that should be seen regularly become complicated and go to ED. 1152
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026This #nzpol government in particular seems determined to chase GPs out of their roles and replace them with cheap-sounding systems that actually cost more in the medium-long term. Often they cost more in the short term. Telehealth, imported physician associates, anything to avoid funding GPs. 2192
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Where are they going? GPs are dropping hours to part time; they're retiring earlier than planned; they're switching to hospital specialties with better pay, on-call contracts and overtime; they're moving to Australia. They're burning out at record rates. 1171
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026GPs are leaving the specialty left right and centre, and who can blame them? The resources and systems GPs need to do their jobs have been left to wither or actively stripped away. It's the worst paid medical specialty with the most unpaid hours. 1120
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026If you squint, the system sort of still looks like it works, because GPs care about their patients and will do a crapload of unpaid hours to make sure they get the attention and care they need. But it ain't right, and it's not sustainable. It's deteriorating fast. 1232
Jamie Small @jamiesmall.co.nz · 10/09/2026Yesterday my wife, a GP, clocked out at 5pm. Stayed at the clinic until 5:45 when she had to go to a class, then spent time with the kids before bedtime. ➡️Then she worked on her laptop until 3 am⬅️ This is not unusual for GPs. It's happening every day, and it's because of under-reaourcing #nzpol 26715
