Standing at the edge of a quiet mountain lake in the North Cascades in late autumn, looking across the water toward a gap in the trees where distant peaks are just visible under heavy clouds. The meadow at your feet has gone to rust, tall dried stems crowding around mossy boulders. Sunlight catches the steep hillside to the right, lighting up the green firs and the orange brush below them, while the far end of the valley sits in shadow under a darkening sky. The water is perfectly still, holding the reflections of the trees.
