Would you have a legal case against the pension administrator for making a negligent investment decision? Surely it is a basic tenet of investing that any of your investments can fail so you shouldn't invest too much in a single entity.

And if you can't find it on the high street, there are plenty of small Ebay suppliers who will get it to you next day - as well as the legendary (in my field) CPC who are usually cheaper than Amazon.

James Perrett @jamesperrett.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That was probably one of the big chains (like Argos or B&Q) who are trying to emulate Amazon with an online marketplace. I find that very annoying. Even no nonsense suppliers like Screwfix and Toolstation are starting to succumb to the "Enshittification" process.

Amazon has sucked in people who are normally socially responsible thanks to their easy return policy and all the extras that a Prime subscription gives you. We won't make progress until normally intelligent people start to see through this manipulation.

I've heard the results a few times and, once you know what to listen for, Suno songs are fairly obvious. It is a bit like those cheap compilation albums from the 70s full of session musician cover versions. Very well played but no spirit.

I'd agree - but sometimes circumstances make it difficult, particularly if you have to work together in some way but they think the relationship should be closer than you feel comfortable with. I must remember not to tell them about Bluesky because I appreciate having more freedom here.

I'm fairly sure that this expansion of the common meaning of average has only happened in the last few decades. When I did O-level and HNC maths, the word average only referred to the mean. So us older people are probably somewhat confused by the change of meaning.

James Perrett @jamesperrett.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I don't remember it being any different at HNC either but I can see that mode, median and mean are all called averages in my son's GCSE textbook.

James Perrett @jamesperrett.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
To us oldies that took O Level maths nearly 50 years ago, average = mean. Mode and median were not averages in those days. In the intervening time, the meaning of average has been expanded to include mode and mean but this is very confusing to those who haven't studied maths for many years.

There was a paper on this a couple of years ago. Apparently the fat in the milk helps your taste buds become more receptive to the tea/coffee taste. So I'm afraid that it is a real physical/chemical phenomenon - not psychological.

Interesting to see that's a Maxell tape. I've had the same issue with Maxell DATs but other makes of DATs stored in the same box have been fine. I've tried gently unspooling the tape by hand but it still breaks.

Good thread - but don't go with the RAC either from reports that I've heard. Auto Aid or Britannia Rescue are my recommendations - they both use a network of independents. I've had experience of both and they've come out within an hour when I've needed them.

I've kept an eye on my contributions but, seeing this article, I checked again this morning - only to find HMRC now saying that I've missed a year (which I haven't). Is this a glitch or am I going to have to fight my way through their systems to find someone to talk to?

Considering where QinetiQ came from (the Defence Research Establishment), I'm surprised that they've diversified as much as that. What is more - is it really a good idea to have a potential Russian asset in charge of them?

An AI flyer is a brown M&M test. If your event or business is cutting corners by using an AI flyer, where else are you cutting corners? What else are you cheating out on? Why should I be bothered to go somewhere you couldn't be bothered to promote with a little of your own personality?

Which prompts the question, how could FB ads be made more expensive and less effective for them? £74 million is tiny relative to Meta's turnover so I can't see them being given much special treatment.

Interesting reading - but it appears they weren't actually using Claude to develop the guidance algorithms as some of these have been in the public domain for many years. Claude was just adding the finishing touches and applying these algorithms to the particular platform.

Interesting article if you ignore the headline. A battery condition report would be very helpful. However, there's no mention of repairing battery packs by replacing bad cells instead of replacing the complete pack which would reduce costs.

I've seen so many Americans that say "this is not America" yet there is no effective opposition to him. Few Americans seem to understand the gravity of their predicament. Or is he really what they secretly want in a leader?

One of the reasons I bought my old style Ioniq. At the budget end of the used market it was by far the safest option for battery health as well as being far more efficient than just about anything else (including the newer Hyundai Ioniqs).

To us in Europe, a healthcare system that can bankrupt people seems crazy. We've started to realise that American values are very different to those of the rest of the world where society is generally much more compassionate.

All I know is that around a third of Americans still support Trump. Surely that's not a sign of a healthy country. Instead of moaning about how people see the US, maybe think about how you can turn things around with positive action. America needs an effective political opposition - where is it?
