St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago has placed more than 100 crosses outside the parish. Each bears the name of someone who died in ICE custody or during an immigration enforcement action. Union workers built the traveling memorial, which began at Holy Name Cathedral last month.

On the other hand, the scene with Achilles in the Odyssey is more or less banned by Socrates in the Republic, so maybe Rubio’s going full Plato.

Tired patriarchy: women are only concerned with the body--stuff like reproduction--not the soul or the mind. No rights. Wired patriarchy: women are only concerned about abstractions and social ideals--stuff like reproduction--not the material and concrete. No rights.

I sort of agree but I also think that being more efficient at beating "worse" teams is a really big achievement. That tends to translate into regular semi-finals appearances.

From our FirstView: "Structural Injustice as Emergent Disorder" by Hochan Kim, buff.ly/TPOHteM
APSR abstract for "Structural Injustice as Emergent Disorder," by Hochan Kim, The author develops the Complexity View of structural injustice, arguing it arises from emergent properties of human action rather than culpable wrongdoing, though this account sets real epistemic limits on social reform. Full abstract is available in linked article.

Yeah, I think that the editor wouldn't even want to ask the reviewer, lest that seem like pressure. But I think it's ok for the reviewer to choose to reveal themselves.

Interesting. I have actually been suggested the opposite, i.e., that it's appropriate to unmask yourself (if you want to) after the fact. I have done this twice (both for articles I accepted and thought were really good), and it prompted nice conversations! I agree people do this very rarely.

To be clear I think it’s fine and good for the institution to be pro-democratic, but there’s no way that counts as neutral under Kalven principles.

James Lindley Wilson @jameslwilson.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I am once again asking if we actually have an institutional neutrality policy or if it’s just an excuse to shut down speech the admin doesn’t like.

Describing a president, in matter-of-fact terms, as "in thrall" to other people is a remarkable editorial choice!

You are right that that is his main point. But his (second) response to "she told the cops she was raped" was "that's a legal conclusion," as if she doesn't have rather direct access to the question of whether the underlying predicates are satisfied.

I'm not sure I like the "who is she to say she was raped? She's not a lawyer!" angle the DA seems to be pursuing.

New article just dropped in APSR! Leah Downey and yours truly on why people should stop using “democratize” when all they really mean is increasing market access. (Looking at you, economists! 👀) And, more positively, what a better vision of “democratization” looks like when applied to finance.

Is the plot of "The Worm Ouroboros" interesting? It's fine. Characters deeply realized? Nah. Is there a female character that matters? Barely. The implied politics? Dreadful. But mastery of style? Off the charts.

I'm sure Tolkien is the direct influence on Beagle, but Tolkien was probably influenced in turn by E.R. Eddison, whose "The Worm Ouroboros" is one of the most extraordinary pieces of writing I've ever encountered.

Relatedly, I think this is the part of Trumpism that many elites, including in the media, most agreed with, and so they projected those beliefs onto most voters regardless of evidence.

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.
