Interesting—especially because this is the guy who turned Teen Vogue into the most impressive political publication during his tenure. Fast Company: Playboy just named its first openly gay editor-in-chief. He wants to change the brand’s pornographic reputation amid a ‘sex recession’ […]

My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.com (US/Canada version)
A hi tech laboratory. Technicians work at computer work stations. A glass cylinder contains an unhappy bespectacled figure in a striped top and hat. A scientist explains to two colleagues:
"The subject will be returned to his natural habitat. But now, thanks to our implanted tracking device, we can answer the question 'Where's Waldo?' in microseconds rather than hours. "

My cover for the ‘New York Times For Kids’ which is in TODAY’S @nytimes.com. I drew the centrespread and some spot illustrations as well.
Cover of the New York Times for Kids by Tom Gauld

A large illustration of a family in a car, absurdly overloaded with luggage on the roof and in a trailer, arriving in the countryside from a city that we can see in the distance. We look out at them from a lush green forest filled with children playing, painting, swimming, climbing, reading, camping, exploring, making music and enjoying the wildlife.Closeup of the car.Closeup of the children.Closeup of the children.

A summery cartoon for @newscientist.com
Caption: “The work was hard and the hours were long, so on sunny days, the professor allowed the team to leave the lab and research their viruses outdoors.”

golden autumnal light falls in a patchwork over a scottish glen, hitting the tops of pyramidal mountains in the distance. a few looming clouds swirl above the ancient caledonian pine forest that lies surrounding a loch below, with saplings growing in the foreground just catching the morning light.

@osma Just a sizeable amount would be enough to align interests, but you’re right in saying that if the flagship is too large it disincentives work on server-hopping features like migration. I still think the pros outweigh the cons though.

@osma I think there’s a benefit to having code & service as part of the same org; the feedback loop for efficient code is as short as it possibly can be, and it aligns instance owners with code owners on that basis. Imagine if Mozilla was run by people who made websites; it’d be a completely […]

Fascinating reveal of Nokia's 2007 internal analysis of the iPhone launch. They were anything but complacent, anticipating * low-cost "mini" iPhones, * decline and rejection of current Nokia design, * 3rd party apps, * future network/lens/sensor improvements […] [Original post on fosstodon.org]
Slide 1 of 22:
* Nokia. Confidential. Dated 10th of January, 2007.
* Apple has agreed with Cisco on using
the iPhone name, details not known.

Slide 2 of 22:
* User interface has been a big strength for Nokia. Consumer research indicates this is in decline. Urgent action needed to prevent further erosion of this position.
* Expect Apple to launch lower-price point
models soon. Hit for market position will come if Apple makes "mini” version of iPhone.

Slide 4 of 22:
* iPhone is not a super feature pack. No 3G nor HSDPA. Only a 2MB camera. Apple changes specs frequently though, no room for complacency.

The John Le Carré Advent Calendar - My cartoon for this week’s @theguardian.com Books. (with apologies to @realjohnlecarre.bsky.social and @harkaway.bsky.social)
Title: The John Le Carré Advent Calendar - Available in all good bookshops.

Description - December 1st to 23rd: open the door to watch Gerorge Smiley reluctantly uncover a conspiracy as he wanders around the damp, dilapidated London of the seventies.

(images of six of the doors, showing a stick figure os Smiley going about his business in shades of browny-gray)

December 24th: Having solved the mystery and written his resignation letter, Smiley eats Christmas dinner alone.
