Snow petrels live in the most extreme environments. They breed amongst boulders high on Antarctic nunataks where summer temperatures may be -15 Celsius. To find food they have to fly hundreds of kilometres back out to the edge of the sea ice @setiinstitute.bsky.social 🌍 🧪🪶🦑

Made the most of the better weather yesterday to explore the area around Wolfs Fang and Echo Camp. We were just mucking about for 10km but it’s pretty hard going through snow and ice. Respect to Omar di Felice who is riding to the pole and towing his kit on a pulk! 🌍 🧪🪶🦑

It’s been a wild few days at Wolfs Fang! The storm that pulled us out of Lake Untersee early hit us pretty hard, with peak gusts of 65 kts or 120 kph yesterday. With winds that fierce we’ve not been able to do too much, just hunker down and wait it out. @setiinstitute.bsky.social 🌍 🧪🪶🦑

Spent time sitting in a snow petrel colony today. The birds are busy pairing up. We’ve seen lots of displaying flights and the odd fight or two. During fights the birds often vomit stomach oil and we’ve seen birds flying around with orange stained feathers.
