It takes no imagination to guess what the Canadian part of the Trumposphere is saying. But Turner has heard it all before, I do not doubt. Hope she has a great season.

In 1969 Loblaws ran newspaper ads featuring the wives of Argos players. They are interesting in several ways relevant to Women's History Month. And I'm guessing that Alda Harrington was a bit of a trailblazer for women of colour featuring in newspaper advertising in Toronto.

It's hard to believe that it's taken this long to start canvassing National Football League quarterbacks on their views about the Apollo program. Finally, after 57 years, some real answers.

Kent wasn't the team's most skilled player, but he was their most important leader in this period of club history.

Also in the Department of UW Warriors Band Nostalgia Department of Nostalgia, here is a letter The Queen sent the band 47 years ago this week.
A letter on Buckingham Palace stationery, which reads: “Dear Mr. Hayman - I am commanded by The Queen to thank you for your letter of 20th September er and for your kind message of loyal greetings which you have sent on behalf of the University of Waterloo Warriors Band. Her Majesty also appreciated your invitation to visit the Warriors Band the next time she is in the Waterloo area in Ontario.”

Did you know that Canada's first tackle football league for women was founded in New Brunswick -- yes, New Brunswick -- in 2004 and is still going strong, more than 20 seasons later, as the Maritime Women's Football League? Canadian football is SO much more than the CFL. maritimewomensfootball.com

In the 1 Aug 1938 issue of Maclean's, noted Montreal sportswriter Elmer Ferguson asserted, in a piece called "I Don't Like Amazon Athletes", that participating in "face-straining, body-racking" sports harmed women's "looks" and "dignity". Roxy Atkins' reply, in the 15 Sept issue, had this header.

A rather timely reminder of how things used to be. In 1969, Rogers was in the business of pirating CBC and CTV sports broadcasts, networks paying through the nose for the rights, and keeping their own customers' money. It was "ridiculous", Ted Rogers said, to suggest this was harming the NHL or CFL.

At the time, Toronto teens could watch NFL games on television and it was generally agreed that NFL players were "better" players. Access and attitudes to the NFL do not, in themselves, provide any explanation as to why the Argos are no longer this popular. They are factors in something bigger.

Quite a typical head-injury scenario in Canadian football from the mid-twentieth century: * player is concussed but "ready to go" (wants to play) * team (and media) say he's unhurt but he stays out (primary concern performance not health?) * player plays the next game * minimal medical involvement

We associate the odious Alan Eagleson with the NHLPA and the 1972 "Summit Series", but he was also deeply involved in CFL matters as a player agent and legal adviser. Here he is in 1969, watching Bill Symons sign the 3-year contract extension making Sy the highest-paid player in Double Blue history.

Haven't had a QB good at it since James Franklin. You have 3 QBs on the sidelines. The likelihood that a QB will be needed for a 1-yard gain is basically 100%. The likelihood that No. 3 will be needed for anything else is tiny. Thus, No. 3 should, first and foremost, be good at 1-yard gains.

The Argos haven't been able to score on third-and-goal since the pandemic. It *might* have helped if the coach knew what down it was. Decent game for watching though.

Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

I do find it fascinating, and somewhat astonishing, that in the present circumstances, hundreds of thousands of Canadians who are striving to "buy Canadian" in other respects insist on continuing to be deeply invested personally in American sports leagues overflowing with stars, stripes and MAGA.

You may have noticed that the Canadian Football League is the only major sports league in North America giving league-wide recognition to truth and reconciliation. That's what having a big league of our own means. Among other things.

Many survivors have described sport as their main or only positive memory at these schools, and some continued to promote and cultivate these sports in their own communities, making them their own or seeing them as useful vehicles for interacting positively with Euro-Canadians.

There is great potential for historians of Canadian sport to make meaningful contributions to Truth and Reconciliation. Sport was deeply embedded in the routines of many residential schools, where it exerted assimilative power and yet also provided a channel for children to express a group identity.

Today, we remember the parents, children, siblings and elders tragically lost to the horrendous acts of cultural genocide committed in government-sanctioned residential schools. May we all walk the path to reconciliation together with a commitment to respect and healing.

Lynch is my favourite golf media figure by miles, but I completely disagree here. The US winning every time is an incredibly blunt instrument of assessment. There are always compelling elements and dramas along the way. The fabric of international sport is woven from more than outcomes.

Chad Kelly's 2 touchdown passes this evening in Winnipeg gave him 68 in his Argonaut career and moved him past Tobin Rote into sixth place in club history. It's possible, but unlikely, that he will catch Damon Allen before the season ends. (At which point he presumably heads to Ottawa.)
