Just been to see The Tubs who were great. Proof again, if it's needed, that there is a lot to be said for two guitars, bass and drums. music.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

This week's (re) reading. Why did no-one tell me how *pleasurable* reading Moby-Dick would be? (TBF some sentences take more than one go but I was expecting a bit of a slog. Not so). TTDC pure pleasure (contains language & attitudes of its time). Music theory in BM beats me but
Three books in a row, all with bookmarks part way through. A Penguin Classic Moby-Dick, a No Exit Press Jonathan Latimer (The Dead Don't Care) and a Norton edition of The Blue Moment by Richard Williams).

This week's reading. Obviously not the whole of Moby-Dick, that would be crazy. But I have started it and am finding it weirdly compulsive. Aim is to finish by Christmas. Also enjoyed two other very different books. @backlisted.bsky.social @simonreynolds.bsky.social
Still in a dream by Simon Reynolds. Chronologically a follow on from his excellent Rip it up and start again, but a very different book. Much more personal and very much about 'being there'.
The golden child by Penelope Fitzgerald. Her first book and quite fun. The blurb calls it a 'classically plotted British mystery ' and a 'minor comic masterpiece ', neither of which is true. But it's funny and sharp about workplaces.
A copy of Moby-Dick with a bookmark a short way through

This week's reading (fewer reading hours than usual for various reasons, including watching the magisterial Colin From Accounts - but wisely spent). Excellent Backlisted episode on this as well. #neverenoughbrookner @backlisted.bsky.social

This week's (re)reading and buying. Not for the first time I bought more than I read @backlisted.bsky.social More in alt text
Re-read: Speedy Death by Gladys Mitchell. My favourite 'golden age' crime novelist. Agatha Christie plus psychoanalysis, witchcraft and, crucially, humour
Read: All the Devil's are here by David Seabrook. Starts like a fairly familiar literary travel book then goes dark quickly. Will re-read Bought. 2 Penelope Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Costello by JM Coetzee following the recent @backlisted.bsky.social re-run and a nice Harvill trade Saramago

This week's (re)reading. Disgrace for Posh Bingo with @backlisted.bsky.social. @jasonburke2.bsky.social 's history of 'terrorists' is fantastic and more relevant today than I expected. Just started Speedy Death again because I haven't read it for ages and it's great

Limbering up for my backlisted.bsky.social posh bingo re-read with this which I just found at my mother-in-law's. Any thoughts on where it sits in the canon?
A table in a suburban garden. On it is a cup of tea ( in a mug with a David Shrigley cartoon of a person with their head in their hands and the text 'You are a bunch of twats and you are totally doing my head in ' which I usually use for work) and a hardback copy of Anita Brookner's Falling Slowly

I hadn't seen The Lemon Twigs before last night so I don't know if this is always the case, but this is definitely the vibe they brought and it was a Very Good Thing (I could almost see them rehearsing in the basement to get ready for the school talent show where they have to get the girl)

Inventory and Auditory work really well together, especially in this great piece on Julie Covington. My listening will always tend to Cramps rather than Covington but this is brilliantly done

All wrapped up by The Undertones. '30 sizzling cuts'. The cover is a photo of a woman covered in bacon and cling film, with a string of sausages around her neck. Great record though

Fantastic episode which I just listened to after finishing The Corner That Held Them this morning. One of the strangest novels I can remember remember reading and I mean that as a massive compliment, I loved it. Yes, it's about workplaces! (As well as other things).

As they say, late to this, but I wanted to read the book before the review. So just to say that Ian P has been one of my favourite music writers since the 80s NME days and @jonathancoe.bsky.social a favourite novelist since What a Carve Up Neither disappoint here.Lovely review of a fantastic book

I really enjoyed this. Partly for S L explaining to MP that he (MP) does actually have an obligation to do his job properly, but mostly because it reminded me that I don't listen to enough Derek Bailey

I didn't take photos at the JT Soar Nottingham gig by @theloftuk.bsky.social because it wasn't that kind of thing, but I would say that if you get a chance to see them please do and whether you do or not you should buy the 'new' album...
