Thanks. Catching up with daughter in Brighton and friends from Manchester university (late 80s vintage). But still a trek!

I've just read this, partly because of this review. It's a remarkable piece of work. I don't know how many minds it will change, but it's definitely making me re-think some things. I wish I was as optimistic about the future

85 and 87 for me. Possibly my favourite band of my late teens and early twenties, still love them

Postman's been! #nowplaying. I missed Liberty Belle on vinyl as I didn't have a record player for a while. The live album is from around the time I saw them for the 2nd (and last) time. The two classic Go-Betweens line ups
Brand new vinyl copies of Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express from 1986 and Fountains of Youth (live in 1987) which I think is new as a standalone album. Both by The Go-Betweens, my favourite band some days

Errm because they want to make their products seem more important than they really are?

As good as you would hope; Ian Penman on Anthony Burgess. Not all about that one book...

Seeing things on here about the Bayeux Tapestry and queues etc just makes me think of this. 1: sort the queueing out. 2: are you sure that really is the Bayeux Tapestry? (See the alt text)
The Golden Child by Penelope Fitzgerald is partly at least about the British Museum's queueing policies and about what you do if you find your major exhibit is a fake

This week's reading and re-reading. A mixed selection! Finished the first two, carried on with the third and read some bits of Arthur Machen prompted by mentions on the @backlisted.bsky.social chat.
The Blue Moment by Richard Williams (the second half is an interesting but slightly eccentric run through music influenced by Kind of Blue from Terry Riley and La Monte Young to My life in the bush of ghosts).
The Dead Don't Care by Jonathan Latimer (No Exit brilliantly published some semi-forgotten hardboiled crime in the late 80s. Jonathan Latimer is probably my favourite as a sense of humour goes a long way).
Moby-Dick
The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen

200 absolute tops here I think, I was really surprised to get a ticket last week. I don't quite know why but hope to see them get the audience they deserve

For me they are all about moving on from the 'freak folk' to embrace other kinds of psychedelic music including dance. And proper pop songs in there too.

it's made me listen to more 50s Miles which is good. Looking forward to the second half, more about Kind of Blue's influence

This week's (re) reading. Why did no-one tell me how *pleasurable* reading Moby-Dick would be? (TBF some sentences take more than one go but I was expecting a bit of a slog. Not so). TTDC pure pleasure (contains language & attitudes of its time). Music theory in BM beats me but
Three books in a row, all with bookmarks part way through. A Penguin Classic Moby-Dick, a No Exit Press Jonathan Latimer (The Dead Don't Care) and a Norton edition of The Blue Moment by Richard Williams).

There was a piece in the NYRB by Miranda Seymour which I enjoyed and which was partly at least about why The Palm House is not as good as some of Riley's earlier books (which I now obviously feel the need to read).

This week's reading. Obviously not the whole of Moby-Dick, that would be crazy. But I have started it and am finding it weirdly compulsive. Aim is to finish by Christmas. Also enjoyed two other very different books. @backlisted.bsky.social @simonreynolds.bsky.social
Still in a dream by Simon Reynolds. Chronologically a follow on from his excellent Rip it up and start again, but a very different book. Much more personal and very much about 'being there'.
The golden child by Penelope Fitzgerald. Her first book and quite fun. The blurb calls it a 'classically plotted British mystery ' and a 'minor comic masterpiece ', neither of which is true. But it's funny and sharp about workplaces.
A copy of Moby-Dick with a bookmark a short way through

I saw what they chose, but not the answers, but I think I was nailed on for winning with Nancy Mitford novels (not even joking)

This week's reading (fewer reading hours than usual for various reasons, including watching the magisterial Colin From Accounts - but wisely spent). Excellent Backlisted episode on this as well. #neverenoughbrookner @backlisted.bsky.social

I think your review is spot on, but for me no matter how good IM was (and he was great) he really didn't make up for the film's shortcomings. MC was very good too, but apart from them and the lovely houses (how much were they worth??) I didn't think much of it

This week's (re)reading and buying. Not for the first time I bought more than I read @backlisted.bsky.social More in alt text
Re-read: Speedy Death by Gladys Mitchell. My favourite 'golden age' crime novelist. Agatha Christie plus psychoanalysis, witchcraft and, crucially, humour
Read: All the Devil's are here by David Seabrook. Starts like a fairly familiar literary travel book then goes dark quickly. Will re-read Bought. 2 Penelope Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Costello by JM Coetzee following the recent @backlisted.bsky.social re-run and a nice Harvill trade Saramago

Back in the day it would have been paid for, either as a fee or as a bigger discount. This isn't necessarily a problem as long as people don't pretend it doesn't happen (in my opinion)

Thank you. Apologies to John for seemingly criticising his work, that was absolutely not my intention. My experience of working for Waterstones in Daunt times was not the best and I'm probably overly cynical now
