That depends on whether or not the ownership’s desire to protect their reputation is more important to them than the institution they own.

A deal means admitting guilt. Which undermines the point of the project. There is also the prospect of a PL investigation for the period 2018-2026. This is not going to be dealt with neatly.

You do not know what will happen, neither do I. Expulsion may happen. And either way the owners could decide to walk away, and that would be the trigger that destroys the club. The potential financial liability is huge, and they show no sign of wanting to negotiate a settlement.

James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That's why I said they falsified their accounts. (Seemingly).

James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Sure it depends on the sanction.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The current ruling already establishes a terrifying precedent. It states that a member club falsified their financial accounts for over a decade, amounting to nearly a billion pounds. How can they allow them to stand without damaging the PL's sporting reputation?
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Then that will be very nice for the Abu Dhabi royal family, who have a private interest in the club. And the fans of course. But it looks extremely unlikely based upon the current state of affairs.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
And it may be the current strategy of the ownership to keep denying it, until the point that the club faces extinction (expulsion, squad costs + liability to other clubs), and then threaten to walk away without facing the consequences, blaming the Premier League all the way.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
And even if they stick around, the Premier League will also investigate the period from 2018-2026. And I doubt very much this inflation of sponsorships ceased in 2018. The model is broken. Why sink more money into a project that will only deliver diminishing returns?
120
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Business only continues as usual until a decision is taken on the appeal(s). If titles are stripped and the club are expelled from the league, then everything with the sponsors will have to be renegotiated anyway. What would the owners do then? I doubt they will pay another two billion.
110
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
In that scenario, what would you do? Spend another billion or two on something that will always be tainted. Or cut your losses. These are serious business people, as you point out.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I agree, and it may be they can use these connections to avoid expulsion. But if they are relegated or expelled. They have already invested a billion and would be looking at doing the same again to rebuild the squad + liability. Plus, the brand becomes toxic, and is no longer useful to them.

If the club are expelled, the owners will drop City as soon as they can. It will become a financial black hole. A stain on their reputation best left to die. They cheated, and the institution will pay the price. If they lose the appeal, the interests of the fans & the owners no longer align.
011
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
All clubs consist of four layers, ownerships & senior management, staff, playing staff and fans. The ownership have seemingly attempted to cheat rules they signed up to, while also supporting regulation that prevented others (Newcastle, Aston Villa) from doing the same.

It’s being treated like a transfer story. Probably because of the wealth of the people involved and its potential impact on transfer activity. Plus there is one journalist who seems to get the news first, which is another similarity.

I would also be happier with more experience. But the club seem to be putting their faith in Leoni and Jacquet. Iraola wants defensive recruitment, so we will see if he gets it.

Or you could view it as Liverpool signed Chelsea and their first choice cb target (Jacquet), and this is Chelsea signing the second choice. Jacquet is higher risk/higher upside, but they cost around the same amount. www.theguardian.com/football/202...

This is probably related to the language. Dutch and Flemish are somewhat similar.
000
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
You would think so. But maybe they will be more conservative with back up targets. I do not expect FSG to sanction €100 + million on Barcola for example.
101
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 10/07/2026
It may make FSG less willing to sanction expensive signings. Hard to justify if there is no overarching long-term strategy.

Hopefully. But we have to remember how many goals we conceded in the early Klopp years too. One of the things I most like about Iraola teams is how they react to set backs. Like when we scored two set piece goals against them in the last away game, but they skill scored a winner in stoppage time.
110
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
All the senior players will have done (VVD, Alisson). I guess it depends who stays and gos. It will be interesting who Iraola appoints to his coaching staff.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 31/05/2026
Well there will be some limits to this, because of pre-season tours etc. We'll see. I guess some players will struggle, and it will then be up to Hughes and Edwards to back the manager on this, even if they have to move on players they have brought in.

I agree that Slot does not utilise his squad properly. But I have more problems with the younger players (Quansah, Trey, Rio in the first half of the season). Nyoni or Morton could have replaced Jones in the squad, and it would not be such a big problem.
000
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
This does not take into account that the first title was a byproduct of a collaborative process. Even if Klopp and Edwards fell out later. And that players at the core of the second title win (VVD, Salah) were key parts of the original title winning squad.
010
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
These players who Klopp made feel 'important' (Trent, Gini, Firmino), still showed an unwillingness to sign contracts, even when Klopp was in complete control. They still left. And if Klopp was still at LFC, Curtis would still probably leave next summer, as he is 25 and wants to start.
100
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
No I got the point, Klopp would have kept him anyway. But Edwards/Hughes also get hammered for letting players leave on a free (Trent, Konate). Klopp often let players see out their contracts, usually out of loyalty, even when it might have been better to replace them. Neither approach is perfect.
210
James Wilson @jamesdavidwilson.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
I think you can make a good argument that Slot underplayed Jones last year. But he is leaving because he is 25 years old and has never been a starter at LFC (much of that under Klopp). Klopp may have kept him a year longer, but is letting him go for free really a better decision?
