What would we do without Escape to the Country playing in hospital waiting rooms across the land? Do people ever buy a property on this show?

I’ve said it until I’m blue in the face; what these people will never understand is that the craft and the making IS the thing, not the end result. People want connection, and art is communion and communication. A machine cannot do this because it has nothing to say. Signal out ≠ signal received.

Working my way through the Exorcist & Omen films (some for the first time). Exorcist 2 remains dire but Legion is great. Omen III is far better than II; I don’t quite understand why it is so hated. The Exorcist property should have ended in 1990 but the Omen prequel from 2024 is passable.

There’s something heartening about Mark Kermode’s decades-long mission to have The Devils director’s cut released by Warners. Just sheer bloody-minded will and refusal to give up on art, on something that you believe in. A promise kept. It’s absurd that it’s taken this long. youtu.be/sRxfHdTEgWw

Spent the afternoon clearing out old paintings, slashing canvasses and breaking down frames to go to recycling. Every painting that I rolled when I left the studio- all of my work from the last five years- has deteriorated in storage. They’re all ruined. It’s kind of freeing.

The degradation of our arts is a systematic, insidious failing in the UK, and it begins with the slow but sure loss of venues; a decline that can’t be arrested once they have gone. It’s to our shame that this is such a familiar story. There is no civilisation without artists. Please share.

What a lovely thing to do for somebody. Thank you David. I had two of these pictures on my old studio wall- it’s a tremendously flattering thing to have somebody make a picture of you, particularly as I always look without in my own work.

Berger’s argument that real art engages with the human experience is exactly my own. The first audience is the maker who, if they satisfy themselves, will inevitably find an audience if it passes the experience metric. This rules out those who produce depthless easy art without thinking about it.

And I’m glad they’re lies. Because the makers of AI aren’t damned by their failures, they’re damned by their goals."

My Childhood, My Country, despite the relentless optimism of its central figure that things could and would be better, was a pretty devastating indictment of how we failed the people of Afghanistan; never more true than in the last five years since we fully abandoned them.

Rijksmusem, November 1997. I remember drifting through the suburbs of Amsterdam listening to ‘Vanishing Point’ by Primal Scream, barely conscious, as the soda lights streaked in arcing blurs past the windows and time slowed to the rate of that bass line. I’d forgotten this until I found this stub.

Giacometti never really did anything for me, but seeing his work in the dimly lit brutalist bowel of Tate modern gave his work a different flavour. Sculpture so often lacks dynamism, but these pieces sing with so much life that you imagine they’ll walk off their plinths at any moment.

I despise gatekeeping, or this form of ingrained elitism which has its origins in conservatism. It reminds me of the acrylic vs oil argument, and is a perochial, pearl-clutching rejection of modernity. A fear response. “How dare you find enjoyment in ways I couldn’t possibly understand”.

I find photorealism in painting pointless and slightly depressing. Of all of the channels of human creative capability that can be brought to bear on painting, this is the most fatuous use of it. Why bother with the paint at all if you wish to erase your own hand?

This is the problem; people see the value of art work as monetary, and not that it has inherent value because of the pleasure it brings. Art isn’t about money- though everybody’s got to eat- it’s about communicating with an audience, and them being receptive enough to hang your work on their walls.
