Youre most welcome. It’s a fabulous painting. I’m the afternoon with this guy- not a wagger, but definitely a camp swisher.

Was in HMV yesterday looking at the Sexy Beast release, and the incredibly sexual boxed set which you should totally buy because it’s gorgeous, but also because of the commentary by @www.johnbleasdale.com I haven’t seen it for twenty six years so I’m very much looking forward to seeing it again.

Anticipating the release of The Devils Director’s Cut, I went back and watched Mark Kermode’s ‘Hell on Earth’ (2002), and I think Dudley Sutton sums the situation up perfectly. I’ve never liked being told what to do, so censorship of any kind feels like an unjust restraint on artistic freedom.

What would we do without Escape to the Country playing in hospital waiting rooms across the land? Do people ever buy a property on this show?

He has been very badly behaved today, bullying his little brother. I’ve had to separate them several times as he just keeps on biting him (and getting big mouthfuls of fur). It all because Hugo is lying on the play mat. Territorial.

I still get a real thrill when I see the cover of Connery by the peerless @www.johnbleasdale.com in the wild. The Great Unwatched by Plumeria is available to pre-order, featuring John and many other critics and writers. Forward by @markcousinsfilm.bsky.social plumeriapics.co.uk/shop/ols/pro...

I did a Trent commission a couple of summers ago. It had the lyrics to Somewhat Damaged embedded in it as that was the client’s favourite song (it’s different tones of black so the lyrics can only be seen in certain light). Two portraits in one.

Spent the afternoon clearing out old paintings, slashing canvasses and breaking down frames to go to recycling. Every painting that I rolled when I left the studio- all of my work from the last five years- has deteriorated in storage. They’re all ruined. It’s kind of freeing.

I’ve set up a new company @epicentrearts.bsky.social to provide a hub for my work, teaching, and eventually the work of others. It has a slightly different flavour to the painting. First Epicentre piece is on its way to a BAFTA winning acquaintance this afternoon. He has good taste.

Yeah it was my third. Twisted Kites was 2002(?) The Siren’s Call was 2005 Feathers was 2009 Small Bruises to the Heart 2010 Disco Dancing in the Abattoir 2010 The first one was ok because I didn’t know what I was doing, then they got progressively worse as I learned to play. Absolute toss.

Berger’s argument that real art engages with the human experience is exactly my own. The first audience is the maker who, if they satisfy themselves, will inevitably find an audience if it passes the experience metric. This rules out those who produce depthless easy art without thinking about it.

Rijksmusem, November 1997. I remember drifting through the suburbs of Amsterdam listening to ‘Vanishing Point’ by Primal Scream, barely conscious, as the soda lights streaked in arcing blurs past the windows and time slowed to the rate of that bass line. I’d forgotten this until I found this stub.

Giacometti never really did anything for me, but seeing his work in the dimly lit brutalist bowel of Tate modern gave his work a different flavour. Sculpture so often lacks dynamism, but these pieces sing with so much life that you imagine they’ll walk off their plinths at any moment.

I find photorealism in painting pointless and slightly depressing. Of all of the channels of human creative capability that can be brought to bear on painting, this is the most fatuous use of it. Why bother with the paint at all if you wish to erase your own hand?

The first Brando that I ever saw, thanks to my step dad, who had excellent taste and remembered seeing it at the pictures as a kid. Brando and EMS pull you to them with the velocity of their performances. It’s stunning. 51-55 was a perfect run for Brando. Amazing. What a dude.

So I pivoted again, and started to just paint. Still from photographic material, but a far less clinical and graphic approach.

There’s some DNA that carried through to what I was doing when I came back to painting- you paint what you know. In the intervening decades the ability to produce these images was superseded by technology, which rendered the painstaking process that I went through to make them utterly pointless.

Many years ago I was regularly commissioned to paint these tri-tone portraits. This is what made me understand that people generally don’t want paintings, they want photographs in paint. Now you can produce these with an app. They have no artistic value whatsoever and I eventually gave up painting.

I really loved the Bret Easton Ellis book, despite having problems with his developmentally arrested political worldview, which leaks into every aspect of his work in overt ways. He’s never subtle. This is a tour de force of nepotism but the synergy between adaptation and source is near perfect.
