It always interested Val when she visited a planet that was so aesthetically diverse from Kaia. As a former special operative, she was trained to constantly be aware of her surroundings. Even just entering the atmosphere of Diamere, she immediately took note of the sky: a clear, light, grayish blue. It wasn’t unique in the empire, nor was it singular. Cool colored skies seemed dominant, but still foreign to her. The sky on Kaia, where she lived and had spent most of her formative years, tended to have a warm cast to it.
She brought her cruiser in low, skimming over the vibrant emerald forest before finding a clearing. The ship swung about just a bit, to better fit the opening between the trees. By the time the side ramp of the vessel lowered, she had made her way from the cockpit to the hold and stood ready. She allowed herself but a moment to reflect, take in the sounds of the local fauna – birds chirped, rodents chattered and squeaked, insects buzzed, and something out there definitely growled – and take a deep breath of the fresh forest air.
With a faint, hopeful smile, she bounded down the ramp and onto the earthen floor.
“Hey!” She’d heard something approaching through the woods, and while she couldn’t be sure at first if it was a predator or a person, the shouting gave her an answer. “You can’t park there!”
A man in a baggy green uniform came barreling out of the woods, heading straight for her. While she had doubts about the man’s combat capabilities, she nevertheless declined to release the hold she had on the sword lashed to the left side of her waist.
“I believe you’ll find I can,” she told him.
The man stopped just in front of her. Sweat soaked through his buttoned uniform shirt. She could tell he was trying hard not to let her see how heavily he was breathing.
“No, you can’t. You’re in the middle of a forest. There’s no parking here.”

He raised his gun. “I’m just gonna shoot you.”
“Yeah, but if you stand that close...”
Her blade flashed out, the edge of it striking the barrel of his gun.
As soon as her weapon made impact, his exploded. A ragged pulse of energy shot out in all directions, not strong enough to take anyone off their feet, but certainly enough to stagger them. Even the queen, who rapidly patted the sparking embers that landed on her poncho.
“…I can do that,” Val finished. “And your gun shouldn’t have exploded like that.”
It was unlikely the man who’d attempted to shoot her could hear her. She couldn’t tell if he, laid out on the floor, was even conscious, but if he was, he’d likely be in too much pain. Plus, an explosion that close to his ears couldn’t be good for them.
“Oh.” As her gloved hands finished smothering the sparks that’d misted her person, she marveled at the unburned material that still slightly smoldered. “This thing’s fireproof. That’s handy.”
She looked around the place at the panicked crew, cowering against the far walls.
“Okay. Anyone have a real strong desire to be next?”

From "Special Inspector EP09" Apparently, across 4 WIPs, this is the only use of the word "fuzzy." #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
She worked to keep her steps fast but measured. Running would draw even more attention, and the guards weren’t the only ones around.
As she moved, the fuzzy edges of the map in her head filled in. More input – sights, sounds, measurements – all rolled together.
Éponine flipped up the coat’s collar and pulled down the hat as she shoved through a door to her left – just missing the attention of another group of armed men filling in the passage ahead of her.
The space she entered was sprawling, broken up by flimsy partial walls hastily erected. Groups of tables and desks were packed between them. Nearly every one was occupied by a human body, and their data flooded into her mind as much as any metric about the environment. Temperature, height, weight, body mass index – whatever that was – heart rate, blood pressure. Lots of information she didn’t want or need regarding lots of people she needed to get away from. She’d have thought it enough to drive her mad, but her mind was able to compartmentalize it and keep her focused.
The noise level in the room began to elevate as she hurried through, pushing past and stepping around human obstacles. She could pick out individual voices and statements amongst the inhuman buzzing, whirring, and beeping: gasps, yelps, curses. Surprisingly few were directed at her.
It was hundreds of yards of tense trotting before she reached the other end of the chamber. The narrow spaces between each of the table groupings didn’t make her attempts at speed or stealth any easier.

I'm a lifelong Transformers fan. Hot Rod has always been one of my favorite characters. This is the first Masterpiece of him I've bought. The previous Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime(s) were unappealing to me for various reasons. I really hope this doesn't disappoint.

“A mission?”
“You sound surprised.”
“Probably because I am. We’ve never been sent on a mission before. Ever.”
“I heard you saying earlier that you weren’t ready for any of this. I also heard you say that no one cares what you want. Both of those things are true.”
“Yes, sir.”
He set the refolded napkin on the metal tabletop, beside his now-empty plate.
“With our enemy’s communication disabled, now’s our chance to do some damage in the rim territories.”
“Sir?”
“The core worlds will still be too heavily fortified. We’d never be able to raid any of their facilities there. The rim worlds may not be as critical to the function of the kingdom, or whatever our enemies plan on replacing it with, but there are still targets of value, and no way for them to call for help. There’s an armory on the third planet of the Mardon system. We need to make sure that the weapons and supplies they have there aren’t used against our people. Presuming any of our people are still left to fight.”

They set their trays down on an empty table and slid onto the bench seating.
Without hesitation, Lizz started wolfing down the food, stabbing and shoveling at every item with her fork and hands.
“Just be careful.” Talla’s fork poked at the comparatively meager items on her tray. “Eat too much too fast and you’re likely to give yourself a stomach ache, and we don’t need an upset tummy derailing the mission.”
“Sure, sure.” She continued eating. “My doctor said I actually need to eat twice as many calories as someone my size normally would just to maintain my body weight.”
“But you’re so…” Jase started to say.
Lizz narrowed her eyes at him. “What?”
“Scrawny?”
Talla groaned. “Bad choice of word. Though, to be fair…”
“Which you don’t need to be,” Lizz said.
“I’m not sure what you could’ve said there that wouldn’t have sounded bad,” Talla finished.
As she continued, Lizz looked at Talla, who was very slowly and methodically cutting her food.
“Are you not hungry?”
“My stomach already isn’t feeling well, so I’m taking it easy. The mission also doesn’t need me yarfing in the middle of it.”

Talla ran her fingertips over the fabric’s edge. It was very fine quality: soft and sturdy. The embroidery was intricate and of superb workmanship. Try as her well-attuned eyes might, they could find not a single flaw in the pattern or craft.
“This is really nice stuff.”
Her wife’s voice came from the next room, raised just enough to be heard over the running water.
“I’m abdicating, not taking a vow of poverty. Speaking of…” She appeared in the doorway, her freshly-washed locks barely damp any longer. A good towel and a fresh sheering would do that. It was cut especially trim around the back and sides, with the hair atop her head allowed a few more inches.
“Holy crap.” Her wide-eyed wife set aside the bundle of black fabric and rose from the bed to meet her.
“Well, I’m technically not the queen right now, so…”
“Oh, wow.” Talla marveled at the head of her partner, ran her fingers through the thick, shortened hair. “Do you like it?”
“I’ve missed having short hair.”
“I’ve missed seeing it on you. This is how I remember you.”
“You never knew me with short hair.”
“No, but this is how you looked my bedroom wall.”
That brought a smile to Val’s face.
“This, two decades younger.”
“Hardly.”

“I can afford it,” he said. “Go on, I just want to finish up with the techs.”
She left and Marco’s demeanor turned.
“Bottom-line it for me. Letting her out of our sight. Is it safe?”
For a moment, Zach forgot how to blink. Or close his mouth.
“Are you… is that a serious question?”
“I would remind you I’m still your boss.”
“Dude, I can’t even say if it’s safe for us keeping her in our sight. As far as I know, we’re breaking completely new ground here.”
“We’re not doing anything,” Judith said. “This just kind of happened. At best we’re observing. Observing new ground? Is that a thing? That’s not a thing.”
Her stubbier colleague threw his hands up.
“Marco, in all seriousness, we have no options here.”
“I believe I already made that clear,” Marco said.
“No, I mean, from a technological standpoint,” Zach said. “Every safeguard that our industry has developed to protect us from being harmed by our own creations, they don’t apply here. She doesn’t have base programming. She doesn’t have a kill switch. Her system seems impervious to shocks. We have no way to interface or get any kind of control. You’re worried DDD might come take her? I don’t know if they could.”

The orbital lines, at least. There were still atmospheric ships to contend with, not to mention surface-to-air countermeasures. The worst of them were the base’s proton cannons, massive beam emitters, each the size of a building with the force to take out a city-sized ship.
Of the cadets, Phan was the only one with the skill to effectively dodge their fire. But she was behind the controls of the cruiser, not a H.O.R.N. The others were not nearly so adept.
The first volley of proton fire rocked them, throwing them off course.
“Crap!” Xank saw red lights flashing across his system readouts. “I’ve got shell fracturing across my entire left side!”
“Get back in formation!” Lizz ordered. “We’ve got to get Phan through! That’s the only thing that matters!”
“Not dying also matters!” Phan replied.
“I’m with Phan on this one,” said Jase.
“Not dying is good, completing the mission is paramount,” said Lizz.
The H.O.R.N. were brought back into alignment ahead of the cruiser.
At the tip of the formation, Lizz unleashed another volley of fire, aimed towards the cannon installations.
Xank’s eyes scanned over his sensor data. “I don’t think proton fire is gonna dent those things. They’re built for that. It’s gonna take concussive force.”
“Well I’m out of rockets,” Lizz told him.
He checked his weapons systems. “I’ve got a few, but the launchers are completely screwed. If we could get in closer…”
“I’ve got this.” Jase took aim and hit the trigger.
A volley of rockets launched from the rear of his mecha.

He screamed out in distress, both from the continued pressure on the pain point, and from the impact against first the furniture and then the floor as his legs gave out beneath him.
“I’m sorry!” he yelped. “I’m sorry, okay! Holy crap, I’m sorry!”
“Not good enough.” Val easily held on despite the punk’s trashing. “If you’d just apologized the first time, maybe it’d be enough. But you doubled and tripled down on it. That level of disrespect rises above what an apology covers.”
“What do you want?!”
She finally released him and drew herself upright. He remained curled on the floor, nursing his injured arm. Though there was no long-term damage, the pain would linger for some time.
“Please, your majesty,” the owner of the shop pleaded. “He’s just a kid.”
Val looked down at the person she’d just hurt, studied his face as best she could through his redness and tears. “He’s way too old to be coddled like that. By the time I was his age, I’d fought three wars. He needs to learn how respect works.”
“At least…” the owner gulped, “Please, I don’t need bloodshed in my shop.”
“I don’t think it’ll come to that. But he needs to make amends.”
“What?” the young man managed to get out between silent sobs.
“You need to make amends. For your disrespect.”
“W-what do you want me to do?”
The shrug from Val was made only with her eyebrows.
“I don’t know. That’s not for me to figure out. You started this, you have to determine how to finish it. That’s part of how it works. A tough guy like you should’ve learned that by now.”

“You’re coming back?!”
“Yes.”
“And you’ll be the queen again?”
“Yes. I thought that was implied.”
Neva threw her arms around the elder woman.
“Oh, my God. No, it wasn’t implied. At all.”
“Well, it’s still going to be a lot of responsibility.”
“Okay.” Neva released her hold and flopped back onto the mattress. “But maybe lead with the long version next time.”
“I’ll take it under advisement.” Val also sat. “But, you’ll do fine. I wasn’t much older than you are when I became queen.”
“But you were older. And you had, you know, training and stuff.”
“Military training doesn’t prepare you to be queen. Trust me, it… really doesn’t. You’ll be fine. I believe in you. And you won’t be alone. Jenneca is still your Guardian, and Talla’s here as the queen regent. She doesn’t technically have any power, but a certain level of respect is afforded to her based on that position alone. Past queen regents have tended to take authority based on sheer force of will, and it’s not like Talla’s short in that department. Like the last… like my mom.”
“Oh. Yeah. I forgot… what happened to her, again?”
“Uh…” Val’s lips pulled back and her teeth clenched. “Are you familiar with the term ‘mercy killing’?”
Neva gripped the sides of her hair as her head dropped down between her knees. “Oh, my God. Lead with the long version!”

She stepped around the man on the ground. He was already unmoving and leaving a sticky puddle in the middle of the tavern.
Her gate bore just the slightest hint of unsteadiness as her boots clanked across the timbered flooring. One had just caught the edge of the man’s blood and streaked it behind her, showing evidence that at least one of her feet was dragging.
She set herself down on the bar stool nearest the middle. The few regulars in the place, as well as the well-appointed barman, stared. She paid them no mind, only focusing on shifting the sword at her side to allow her to sit more comfortably.
It was the barman who broke the chilled silence in the place.
“I reckon you could use a drink after that.”
She lifted her chin to see him. Strands of golden hair barely reached her eyes.
“I don’t really drink. And I’ve got way too many wounds to make alcohol consumption a good idea.”
The barman tried to offer a knowing, friendly nod.
“I didn’t want to say anything, but you look like you’ve been through hell.”
She gave a pained smile.
“It’s been a week.”

Due to the rough surrounding terrain, Trainer had been forced to land the jump ship a good distance away from the listening post. The receiving tower itself was embedded into the hilly rock, but a grated platform had been constructed all around its circumference; working maintenance on it would’ve been impossible otherwise. The ground was simply too uneven and unsteady for it.
It took multiple trips to haul all of the required, bulky equipment and tools from the ship to the access panel at the antennae’s base. There was a lot of equipment – and tools – needed for the job, and even a man as strong as he was could only carry so much at a time, even if he was in his physical prime, which Trainer no longer was.
Though a bit out of breath – a state he was sure he wouldn’t have found himself in similar circumstances in his younger days – he immediately set about the work of connecting up the components he’d brought and wiring them into the hatch he’d opened.
Without needing to look behind him, he noticed the presence of another man.
“I let you live for the sake of our friendship.” Trainer didn’t even glance up from his task. Not yet. “I’m beginning to regret that.”
“Hey, I don’t want to be doing this,” said Trumane.
“Then don’t. You’re a grown man. You can make your own decisions.”
“You don’t know what it’s like, having these people over you.”
“I’ve been in the service of the crown for decades. You think I don’t know about churlish overlords?” Ignoring a spray of sparks from inside the panel, Trainer kept working at the connectors. “How’d you know I was here?”

After a few moments, folds started opening up and royal cruisers began flying from them. The ship at the lead was larger, more ornate, than anything they’d seen on their journeys.
“Holy crap.” Jase’s mouth went slack and, though he’d never admit it, water came to his eyes. “That’s…”
Lizz broke out into a grin.
“The queen’s armada.”
All around them, the royal armada began engaging Karmot’s forces, pounding them with heavy volleys of cannon fire.
Lizz’s grin faded. “Crap.”
“What?” Jase asked.
Xank looked up from his sensor readings. “Uh, we have multiple target locks.”
“On us?” Jase asked.
“They don’t know who we are!” Lizz said.
“What do we do?” Phan was staring straight at an oncoming wave of Kaian fighters.
“Get us into a goddamn fold!” Lizz yelled. “Sorry, just, get us out of here.”
“Okay, but where am I going?” Phan asked. “No one every answered that.”
“Head for home,” Lizz stated. “Kaia. Talla needs medical help and she said the castle’s the only place to get it.”
“Heading home,” Phan acknowledged.
In the distance, they could see the forward blasters of the oncoming fighters starting to glow.
After a brief delay, a fold opened up in front of them and swallowed their battered cruiser.

Chapter 5

“Jenneca was my firstborn child.” Val’s boots trod along with far more grace and delicacy than her young walking companion. “It’s funny, I was just thinking a few days ago, about the night she was born. I remember standing over her crib. I was so scared.”
“You were scared of a baby?”
“No, I wasn’t… I was terrified of the circumstances. I’d never been a mom before. I knew I was lucky. I was going to have help. Lots of help. But you still worry about those things. Bringing a child into the universe. Hoping you don’t screw it up too badly. I wanted to make sure I got it right with her. With all my kids.”
“Did you?”
The question shouldn’t have caught her off guard, but it did. If Gringe was more observant, if she’d had the kind of training Val had, she’d have perhaps noticed the tiny hitch in the white-haired woman’s gate.
“No. Not always. And that’s what I was scared of, all those years ago. But, I made Jenneca a deal, that night. I’d never been a mom before, but she’d never had a mom before. So we’d both have to try our best not to screw the whole thing up. It’s not like I grew up with any examples. I didn’t have parents.”
“How did you not have parents?”
“I grew up thinking I was an orphan. It turned out my birth parents were… closer than I realized. But they were distant. I could observe, from afar, but I didn’t really know what it was like.”
“I had a mom.”

The place where this bar existed resided in near perpetual darkness. The sun barely rose most of the year on this hemisphere of the planet, yet some small number of unfortunates had no choice but to make it their home.
The easiest way they’d found to get through existence – and they didn’t try very hard for alternatives – was to drown their sorrows at the local tavern. The place had no name, nor had it need of one. There were no others for thousands of kilometers.
The front door never closed as long as the business was open, so there was nothing impeding the flight of the stranger as he tumbled through the air and cracked against the dry, dusty floor. He was a big fella, and looked mean.
He was also armed, as became evident to the regulars as he quickly stood and drew a pistol from beneath his coat.
It was for nothing. Before he could even turn and take aim, a jet-black blade had pushed its way out of his ribcage. His pistol clattered to the floorboards. It took him a moment of stammering before he joined it.
The figure standing in the doorway – left arm held out, grasping the pointing, dripping sword – was as unknown to the bar’s occupants as the man gasping out his last at her feet.
She brusquely wiped the blade against the back of his coat before sliding it into a sheath held strapped around her waist, all with her left hand.
Everything about her outfit was dark, from the boots to the trousers to the tunic to the weapon itself, and of course the grungy poncho that covered it all. It stood in stark contrast to what lay beneath: a pale woman with hair nearly stark white.

Talla’s tremoring hands continued to fumble with the injector.
“Do you need my help?” asked Lizz.
Talla didn’t say anything, just continued shaking.
Lizz took the device from her. “I’ve never done this before. Do I have to inject in a certain spot?”
“It just needs to get into my bloodstream. So, any part that has blood in it.”
Lizz took hold of her arm, pressed the head of the injector to it, and squeezed the trigger. The blue fluid capsule instantly emptied.
After wiping off the injector head, she set it back on the counter.
“How long does it take?” she asked.
Talla gritted her teeth. “Not long.”
A low, pained growl rumbled from her throat.
Lizz took her hand and held it tightly.
At first, Talla’s grip was a bit unstable, like she was trying to bear down but can’t seem to muster the strength.
It grew increasingly forceful over the next few seconds, getting to be painful.
Lizz continued holding throughout.
Talla’s eyes popped open and she let out a deep gasp, sucking for air.
Lizz wrapped her arms around her and held her tight. Talla hugged her back, holding her close and breathing in deeply.
“It’s okay,” Lizz said softly. “It’s okay. I’m here.”
“Thank you.”

“When I started off on this quest, it was like the Crown was calling me to that planet. I just had to follow where it was leading. But I’m not feeling anything like that now.”
A light on the console, just to her right, began flashing a distinct pattern, while a low, unmistakable tone faded in and out from the comm system.
“Huh. Well that’s a distress call. What do you say we…” She glanced back over her shoulder. “Right. I already dropped the baby off.”
Even before her fingers found the control for the comm system, she was reading what information she could from the projection in front of her. There wasn’t much besides the name and location of the ship.
“Transport Kethla, this is the royal cruiser RC-86 Sentinel, I’m reading your distress signal.” Already she was turning the ship and readying the fold drive.
The voice that came back hissed and popped with interference. “We read you Sentinel. This is Captain Partron of the Kethla. Your voice is music to our ears.”
Val smiled. “I’ll have to tell my wife and kids you said that. They’re under the impression I’m completely tone deaf.”
“It’s the sweetest thing I’ve heard in a while.”
Val worked the controls in front of her, trying to tune her comms system to compensate for the distortion. “Kethla, your signal’s coming through a bit garbled. Way more than there should be at this distance. I don’t know if there’s some interference or what.”
“I’m afraid it’s not interference, Sentinel. It’s our transmitter.”
“Is it damaged?”
“It’s old. Everything on this transport is.”

Xank knelt in the grainy terrain beside the tanker and looked over the connection port.
“How’s it looking?” Trainer asked him.
“I mean, you were right, it’s intact. It’s also covered in crud and the wind isn’t helping.”
“How long to get it clean enough to use?”
“Oof. Maybe ten minutes?” Xank took off his backpack and opened it.
Trainer gave a nod. “Be careful, but be quick.”
Xank pulled an energy torch from his pack, ignited it, and started to work on the crusty exterior of the tanker’s port.
Trainer, meanwhile, headed to the side of the cruiser, where he opened a panel and began unspooling a thick transfer tube: it was easily more than a foot in width and heavy as all get out. Thankfully, the things closest in size and shape to it were Trainer’s own arms.
Standing a ways away, Lizz noticed Jase stationing himself maybe ten meters from her.
She tapped her comms.
“Jase. Move. Away from me.”
He glared over at her. “Are you seriously gonna be that immature?”
“We’re supposed to be forming a perimeter. There’s only four of us. We need to be spread further apart.”
He let out a weary sigh but did take several steps away from her. “Better?”
“Keep going. I can still see you.”
“I can’t tell if you’re messing with me at this point.”
“I can barely see anything,” said Phan.

The game continued on. Trainer slid a couple of pieces and placed his cards down. There were gasps all around and murmurs as he pulled all of the chips on the table towards him.
Still grumbling, the others got up and headed for the refreshments. Only Trainer and Genevieve remained behind, with Lizz standing just to his side.
“Why, Mr. Ploom, I do believe you’re in danger of breaking our bank,” Genevieve said.
“A place like this?” Trainer asked. “I don’t believe that for a second.”
Genevieve leaned in, allowing the neckline of her dress to drape open.
“No. Perhaps I was just hoping to offer you some alternative form of payment.”
“I never take that in payment. Only when willingly and enthusiastically given.”
“You strike me as the sort of man that people are eager to give it to.”
Trainer simply smirked.
Genevieve shifted even closer. “Come with me and leave your girl here. Unless you want to bring her?”
“I never use her for that.”
Desperate to not react, Lizz found her face going flush and her jaw painfully clenching. There was nothing she could do to prevent either from happening.
“Clave!” Genevieve suddenly called out.
“Hm?” From across the room, Clave perked up.
“Make sure Mr. Ploom’s assistant is taken care of.”
Genevieve delicately took Trainer’s arm and led him away.
For her part, Lizz stepped towards the table and scooped Trainer’s winnings into her arms.

“No they don’t,” said Trainer.
“Don’t what?”
“Need more information.”
“I just said they said…”
“If they needed more information, they’d have asked for quantity. No one buys just one egg.”
The clerk shrugged. “Maybe you’re making one really small cake, how do I know?”
“Since they know I’m only looking for one, they know what I really mean. And you are trying my patience.”
The clerk backed up, praying there was enough room behind him to get him and his musty robe out of Trainer’s reach.
There was not, but salvation – or at least a distraction – came as an older man burst from the curtain, his arm pulled back, his stubby fingers clutching a colorful, shiny stone.
“Here’s your bloody egg!”
The stone was loosed, the old man’s aim true, as the polished rock flung straight towards Trainer’s face.
His hand effortlessly jutted out, snatching the stone from the air.
“Oh.” The old man chuckled nervously. “Ha. Well done. Well done.”
The clerk shuffled back along the dirt that passed for a street, spinning to get clear of the stall and attempt a sprint. His progress was halted as the older man grabbed tight hold of his coat sleeve.
“Oh, don’t be so squeamish.”

“You’re carrying your sword upside down.”
Val smiled.
“A true swordswoman always carries their weapon with the edge facing up.”
The girl’s face scrunched up.
“Why?”
“It goes back to the olden days, when swords were made out of metal that could dull. If you carried it with the edge facing down, the edge would rub against the inside of the scabbard and get blunted. Most swords these days are made from more durable material, but the tradition stuck.”
“Oh.” The girl continued staring. “Can you teach me how to swordfight?”
Val cocked an eyebrow.
“Do you have a sword?”
“Can I borrow yours?”
“No you may not.” Val lifted her sword. “This sword is made from a metal called ebonore. It’s very rare and, more importantly, it makes the sword extremely dangerous to wield for anyone who doesn’t know exactly what they’re doing.”
“Oh.” The little girl’s eyes kept falling on the weapon. “Can I try it anyway?”
“I’m still going with ‘no’.”

From "Unified: The Seven Labors of the White-Haired Woman" I missed several days of these due to a non-functioning computer. I hope that's all cleared up now (please, God, let that all be cleared up now). #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Seated in the plush pilot’s chair, Val casually gripped the controls. Though protocol strongly discouraged it, she was more than adept at flying her own spacecraft, and did so whenever possible.
Her thumb gave a quick flip to a trio of switches in front of her to begin the ignition sequence. That was something she didn’t know if she’d ever get used to. The type of craft she’d learned on, and most models within her lifetime, had the ignition switches overhead, not in the console, lost among the multitude of control panels.
She hesitated a moment, anxiously running her hands over the levers before her. Waiting for the exterior announcement.
“Clear the hangar deck. Clear the hangar deck. RC-86 is prepped for takeoff. Repeat, RC-86 is prepped for takeoff.” She took a deep breath, knowing the words she’d been expecting were imminent. “RC-86, hangar deck is free. You are cleared for takeoff.”
With a smile creeping onto her lips, she eased forward on the throttle. Opening up the quintet of engines on the ship’s aft to only a fraction of their full potential brought a satisfying reverberation to her craft as it lunged forward.
As she streaked down the long runway, tracking lights flashing past, a horrible realization hit her, sinking deep into the pit of her stomach.
Talla had been right. This was, objectively, a really cool hangar.
She nudged the throttle just a tiny bit more, speeding her approach towards the opening to daylight.
A warning light flashed on a screen just off to one side. She was exceeding the hangar’s speed safety limits.
She pushed forward a bit more.
