Social contact & media trust matter. We find a significant relationship between people's level of interaction with Muslims, where those with less/none are more vulnerable to stereotypes & conspiracies. Those with more trust in social media than mainstream sources also tend toward more negative views

Our research reveals sobering findings about the scale of negative & hostile attitudes too. More than one in three (37%) agree with the statement "The growth in the Muslim population poses a foundational threat to UK culture." 29% believe in no-go zone conspiracies

Muslims face disproportionate hostility compared to other faiths too. About twice as many people (22%) see Muslims as making an overall negative contribution to society as members of other faiths such as Jews (12%) or Hindus (8%)

A narrow majority of the public express basic acceptance of Muslims, yet this is shallower than needed to secure resilient foundations 52% agree Muslims are just as British as white non-Muslims Overall views can largely be split into one-third positive; one-third neutral; one-third negative

While 73% of British Muslims feel the country is a good place to be Muslim, a majority (56%) reported facing prejudice in the past two years, particularly younger people. 61% say they feel more worried about their safety

Sad to see this gang of racist thugs yelling outside an asylum hotel in Bournemouth I was one of many horrified passers by heading back from a beach trip - I wonder if they realise the damage they’re doing to local tourism

In focus groups, concern about Channel crossings greatly outweighed discussion of migration for work/study/family. This is similar in our tracker poll. There's been some hardening of views since 2022 but the public struggle to identify where they'd reduce migration when asked about specific groups

Our report tries to sketch the light and shade. From the Lionesses(!) to local WhatsApp groups, we found clear sources of pride and connection. It's not all bad vibes! There are creative community groups, schools and national institutions which govt partnership could strengthen shared ground

Our research similarly uncovered the important role of heritage and regional identities to creating pride in post-industrial areas, from the potteries of Stoke to East London initiatives building a modern Cockney identity

Social contact also offers a powerful antidote to pessimism and division. Those in our poll with ‘regular’ chances to meet people from other backgrounds were *twenty-six* percentage points more positive about local cohesion with those who rarely had contact

It’s not all bad! And the report foundations of optimism from which to build. The UK public generally have positive views of their immediate neighbourhood, with 7 in 10 feeling local cohesion is strong

Meanwhile society is becoming more online, even since the pandemic, and exposure to polarised debates and media ‘perma-crisis’ are deepening these sources of division. We found broad support for action to address online hatred and foster healthier online communities

Combined these issues are contributing to mistrust of politicians, as have scandals including party-gate and ticket-gate. We found widespread ‘un-alignment’ with mainstream parties, loss of faith in politics as usual & more curiosity towards populism

Economic pessimism is creating deep frustration towards politicians amidst declining high streets, strained public services and rising cost of living This is also restricting people’s interaction with community, limiting income and time for socialising

We find sharp divides over immigration & asylum - seen by the public as the top risk to local cohesion. Perceived competition for resources (housing, welfare) is a key driver, exacerbated by misinfo and divisive political discourse. Asylum hotels also create tensions without local consulttion

The acknowledgment of colonial legacies in its collection was limited at best, but it was encouraging to see faith groups and several Indian museums play a central role in shaping the curation

Lack of pan-European identity does not equate to isolationism. 57% of the public support closer UK-EU cooperation on defence, including 45% of Leave voters. Support for closer ties spans a wide range of policy issues

Simply cannot see how @rcolvile.bsky.social can seriously claim that migrant care workers ‘are not contributing’. They are taking care of our unwell and elderly parents/grandparents, filling a chronic labour shortage

@jydenham.bsky.social shares how politicians need to feel emboldened to challenge dogwhistling & prejudice. In equal measure, political leaders need to build more inclusive modern narratives that build shared belonging in diverse Britain

Dame Sara Khan says central & local government should have anticipated the summer riots, based on growing tensions and far-right activity. Better tension monitoring networks are needed to get upstream of flashpoints, helping local & national leaders to be more prepared and proactive

@jydenham.bsky.social talks about the need to learn from post 9/11 policies which stigmatised Muslim communities. Similarly post-riots response cannot label white working class people ‘a problem to be dealt with’. Policymakers need to humanise their discourse and build better relationships of trust

Jake Puddle @jakepuddle.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Ted Cantle opens our concluding panel of today’s ’After the Riots’ looking at the policy response needed. This isn’t just about the summer riots, he says. A UK cohesion strategy needs to address polarisation on international issues e.g Gaza. It needs to confront a broader decline in political trust

Jake Puddle @jakepuddle.bsky.social · 20/11/2024
Misbah Malik of @hopenothate.org.uk notes that the violence did not emerge spontaneously but relate to broader, polarising political discourses about multiculturalism and people seeking asylum. The response to the riots must go beyond law & order to challenge prejudice in the national conversation
