Welcome to Day 3 of #Hastings960. I only started at 9.15, with just 22 miles to do today - and what a glorious day. This is looking whence I came, last evening. Updates to follow.

85 years ago today my grandfather crossed the border into the Lithuanian SSR from occupied Poland as part of Army Group North. He spent most of the next few years in the swamps of the Volkhov and on the gates of Leningrad, before being severely wounded in late winter 1944. @alanallport.bsky.social
A German 2x4 of an artillery observation battalion on the move in northern Russia, date unknown. Four men of the crew are visible, the second from the right is my late grandfather. A scissors artillery targeting binocular is in the centre of the vehicle, and a captured french light machine gun is clearly visible, indicating that this march took place in an area covered by partisan activity and/or during an advance into enemy territory.

It’s a little known fact that Bomber Command did send some RAF heavy bombers to North Africa (albeit in very small numbers) to help shore up the catastrophic situation in June 1942. These were RAF Liberators and Halifaxes. Working alongside USAAF HALPRO detachment heavies.

21.4.1958 NS-Kriegsverbrecher Otto Bradfisch verhaftet. Führer des Einsatzkommandos 8, Einsatzgruppe B verantwortete Deportation und Exekution Tausender. #OTD #OnThisDay #Kalenderblatt #Geschichte #Kriegsverbrechen #WWII

This female statue at the St. Matthias cemetery on Röblingstr. (Berlin-Tempelhof) was shot in its back, probably during the last days of WW2, possibly because it was mistaken for a real person. In 2006 it was relocated to about 70 metres east of the church, now overlooking the war graves.

Some of the building ensembles from the late 1930s on Grazer Damm, five-storey apartment blocks lining the streets with huge courts in the middle from where most buildings are accessible, have retained their totalitarian “charm” (most carry a plaque from the reconstruction program, here 1952/53).

17.3.1969: SS-Rottenführer Josef Blösche vor dem Bezirksgericht Erfurt wegen NS-Verbrechen angeklagt. #OTD #OnThisDay #Kalenderblatt #Kriegsverbrechen
