This is 100% spot on but I wish Politico and Guardian pieces connected the dots uniting RightsCon, Disinfo, and other affected events: countries are normalising censorship by proxy against civil society spaces and no government is speaking up against this trend

Overall trend. Touching grass is winning. Combined use of social media, gaming, and streaming is down by more than 1.5 hours a day for this class compared to 2024. Netflix & HBO Max taking big hits.

When an animal communicates it does so for self-determined and self-interested reasons. When an LLM “communicates” with you it’s doing so in a way that’s fundamentally much less like an animal than a kitchen timer buzzing at you

In two years we've gone from a standard where the President's budget proposal was a set of suggestions Congress would ignore to where Congressional appropriations are now a set of suggestions the President ignores.

This was what I couldn't get over with the guy who went viral for saying he let his chatbot choose what to write as a treat Sure, this is dumb for a ton of reasons, but at the top - you think you've got a sentient being & you're treating it as a slave that you occasionally let write it's own poem?!?

Having a subjective experience assumes sentience/consciousness, which an LLM doesn't have any more than your toaster has a subjective experience of cooking a bagel

There's tons of smart writing on why the concept of sentient LLMs is just flat wrong, but I find this to be Anil Seth note to be especially insightful: We don't have this debate about other types of AI that "think" the same way but don't imitate talking like a human www.noemamag.com/the-mytholog...

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

An issue with the term "Zionism" is its used as a label for everything from the most basic, human-rights-conscious views about remedying Jewish Diaspora to the most extremist ideas about a sole religious/ethnic claim to the region And anti-Semites exploit this to conflate the former with the latter

🧵 Congress is holding its first hearing today on the rogue AI cyberattacks. METR, which surfaced important facts about the Hugging Face hack, is testifying. But OpenAI limited its investigation, meaning that there could be a lot more we don't know. Here are 7 questions lawmakers should ask👇:

The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

So we’re left with a really strong incentive to keep pace of frontier AI moving very fast to defend against hacking threats. But we also have AI being developed so fast that effective measures aren’t being built to make AI follow instructions like “don’t illegally hack stuff!” A bad combo 🙃

Experts are right to criticize the “Win the AI race with China!” narrative as reductive. I’ve testified to Congress on emphasizing that very point. But we also need to acknowledge that lots of threats (including China) can use AI for offensive cyber and we need to keep pace to defend effectively

This is a smart way to to distinguish it because it underscores the challenge that these risks create opposite drives #1 incentivizes keeping AI development moving fast to stay ahead of bad actors #2 incentivizes slowing AI development down to deal with direction and alignment problems

The NYT 100 Top Shows of the 21st Century list is really fun and great. Tons of great shows, top 10 feels right, and especially fun to see less-watched ones like Battlestar Galactica getting their kudos. Three shows I'd call seriously snubbed from the list: The Knick Mindhunter Penny Dreadful
