One of my favorite vaccine facts is the antigen load across all routine vaccines today is 90% less than that in the 1950s-1980s when killed whole vaccines were common.

Acetaminophen Use During Pregnancy and Children’s Risk of Autism, ADHD, and Intellectual Disability
This nationwide cohort study with sibling control analysis examines the association of acetaminophen use during pregnancy with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, and intellectual disability.

Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 23/09/2025
Women's pain is already undertreated. There's no easy alternative to acetaminophen in pregnancy. Aspirin and Ibuprofen have actual negative proven effects on a fetus. Also stop blaming mothers. This misinformation will hurt people.

6-6 tie. 1 person on the phone disconnected and didn't vote. Chair breaks the tie as a no. Fails, thankfully.

Great comment by non-panel member that vaccines are for primary prevention as a public health strategy which has totally been lost of the panel for the past 8 hours.

Very good points being made by Hillary Blackburn (pharmacist) and Dr. Cody Meissner as to why vote no on this vote. This vote will be close. Again many of the members don't understand how these votes are going to actually play out in real life.

From the ACIP website. The current group did not follow this guidance.
072
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
According to the ACIP (historically), they define it as "In this context, CDC defines a health care provider as anyone who provides or administers vaccines: primary care physicians, specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and pharmacists." So techs would not count.

Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
One member just suggested to amend this and strike "require a prescription." That would make the vote, "It is the sense of the committee that state and local jurisdictions should for the administration of a COVID-19 vaccination." ????

Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
Passed 11-1.

Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
True, I think practically - at least at most pharmacies - they don't give vaccines in the shared decision making category. Maybe if you do a minute clinic appointment.
110
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
Again, this is so vague that none of the members understand what this vote would mean. In the presentation an example to be added on the VIS was the vaccine may cause birth defects (which is false). ACIP historically does NOT usually vote on this type of vote.
122
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
The individual ACIP members don't seem to understand what they are voting on right now. Voting yes on #4 is requiring shared decision making with a healthcare professional. This would prevent people from walking into a pharmacy and just getting the vaccine. They are all twisted up in terminology.
261
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
There is a different vote (#2) that would require a prescription. I don't know if ACIP has that authority though. Shared decision making is different and is a conversation between a health care provider and a patient about risks/benefits.

"We know children are biting children on the playground" -Public comment for why universal Hep B vaccination at birth is beneficial.
110
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
lol. ACIP is basically giving NO guidance to the US population. Everything is "individual" risk. Practically speaking, this will cause fewer and fewer people getting vaccinated.
360
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
It's conflicting when one theme for the committee has been individual choice / freedom, yet 2 of the votes (requiring a script and this complex sentence) are the exact opposite.
000
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
Here is one example: jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... "In this multisite observational cohort study, of 42 156 pregnancies ending in live birth, first-trimester COVID-19 vaccination was not associated with increased risk for selected major structural birth defects."
jamanetwork.com
First-Trimester COVID-19 Vaccination and Structural Birth Defects
This cohort study investigates if messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccination is associated with an increased risk for major structural birth defects among live-born infants.
062
Jake Johnson, MD @jakejohnson.bsky.social · 19/09/2025
This is the type of misinformation that is going to lead to decreased vaccination among pregnant women and result in more sick infants. WILD statement being made. The data is clear that the COVID vaccines are not associated with birth defects.

New ACIP group will be discussing thimerosal in vaccines next week. This will be a good litmus test for the new panel. (It's a preservative used only in multi-dose vials and shown to be safe in large studies.)

When Americans raised concerns about RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine views, he said he was "not gonna take away vaccines from anybody." But now he's taking them away from millions of mommas and babies. Vaccine recommendations should be based on science, not RFK Jr.'s political agenda.

How many hospitalized patients need care in the ICU? How many of them survive? What interventions do they receive there? These are some of the questions I had two years ago while trying to write the "background" section for my masters thesis. But I couldn't find the answers... they did not exist.
