The story of Cavan Sullivan is a story about American soccer idols, and by extension, a story about American soccer itself, both the good and the bad. 20 years after Freddy Adu, American soccer has its prodigy. For @scoutedftbl.com, the tales we weave about Cavan and all that came before (🎁 link):

Cavan Sullivan, American mythmaker
Two decades after Freddy Adu, the United States finally has a new soccer icon. Now the nation must learn how to cope with the superstar it's craved.

Was watching a YT video earlier on Wirtz and saw this viz. I see this and immediately think “god he works hard off the ball” but Steur does move so much when #NUFC have possession, to create different passing angles and move the opposition around. Think this is a testament to his all round game.

CONTROLLED CHAOS My first long-read is out. On Newcastle United 2.0: analysis of the start to the season, the intelligence of Sean Steur and Nico Gonzalez, Joe Willock’s resurgence, Rory Finneran at Notts County and a bit of vibe scouting on Martin Baturina. Enjoy! 🔗👇 #NUFC

So the first half of this weekend's game provided a bit more clarity about #NUFC 's intentions with the ball - which was welcome. One thing that has become a repeated pattern is the use of the half space across from either wing by both Winger & Full Backs.

We learnt a lot about Steur’s character yesterday. 18 yrs old and mad a huge error. He regathers himself, played the rest of the game making 4 progressive passes, 2 passes into pen area and 1 shot assist. To be this positive with the ⚽️ after a mistake at 18 is very encouraging. #nufc

Sadly, as was the story with Murphy’s game vs Millwall, the final action was pretty poor, but this came from Willock’s run in behind and centre-forward-type strength to hold off a big EFL centre-back. 5/ #nufc

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Knocks it back to Murphy, who moved cleverly off the ball, which positioned him nicely to collect the loose ball. 4/ #nufc

A good example here against Millwall. We launch a long ball where Millwall have a 2v1 on Willock. Two big EFL centre-backs are always tough to deal with. Willock battles so well, keeps his balance and gets first contact on the ball. 3/ #nufc

You can see in this pass network against Spurs that Willock is practically our centre forward in possession. 2/ #nufc

One aspect of Willock’s game, which is hugely underrated, is his strength. For me, this is partly the reason why Jaissle opts for Willock in the "10" because he loves the counter movements between him and Wissa. 1/ #nufc

His general play on Tuesday was brilliant (especially first half) lacked quality in the f3 up until his goal. I think Matty quite likes them counter movements between him and Wissa as well.

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
For physicality reasons I’d go Miley but Ramsey for sure is giving Matty a bit of a headache now

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I’m puzzled why no Ramsey in 10. Willock a better runner in behind is probably the reason why

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
It should get better with time and it was well documented Jaissle wanted a leader in midfield. Hopefully Nico can fill that role.

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
For me that point ties in with the organisation/leadership issues. There’s issues with hesitation in the press. Jaissle spoke about it post Spurs.

This is why I’m quite nervous for tonight. I do think there is potential for a slip up. Results have been a little kind to us so far. #nufc

▫️Decision making on when and when not to press. We’re getting it wrong quite often. ▫️Lack of leadership/organisation on the pitch ▫️Tactical stuff, like Liverpool using central rotations to create gaps in midfield and Bournemouth using beyond movements to create space on the edge of the box. #nufc

There’s no excuses for not winning tonight but it’s been pretty obvious that this team is still “a work in progress” We’re conceding way too many shots at the moment. For me that is coming from: #nufc

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
You could argue that diminishes some of our counter attacking threat but if you watch the goal back. We are talking 2/3 yards further back. That trade off is worth it imo. 3/ #nufc

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Our two cm’s are tasked with tracking runners from deep which opens up space on the edge of the box. I think a simple fix would be our 10 dropping into our second line in the low block. 2/ #nufc

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I remember towards end of last szn when Howe went to a 4-2-3-1. In our low block, he’d still have our 10 dropping into the second line. Jaissle doesn’t do that but I think for the first goal on Saturday we needed Willock covering that space. 1/ #nufc

As with anything tactical in footy, there is a trade-off, and I thought our subs made that trade-off work in our favour. 6/ #NUFC

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
I thought Ramsey and Willock made a difference tactically in that role. Both showed a bit more experience. In the next two screenshots, you see Ramsey takes the ball from Szobo and springs a counter-attack. 5/ #NUFC

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
There is obvious risk attached with this approach as there is still a lot of space centrally as we saw with the goal when Wirtz and Gakpo rotated leaving Steur confused what to do. 4/ #NUFC
100
Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
Jaissle did react to this later in the half and had Wissa (then Willock) man mark Gravenberch and we became a lot more man oriented in the middle of the pitch. 3/ #NUFC
100
Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
But Liverpool exploited this via Szobo dragging Miley out of position and then Gravenberch pushing up between the lines. As you can see here. This actually leads to a dangerous cutback through Kerkez, and a sharper Liverpool side probably converts this chance. 2/ #NUFC

Some interesting tactical details in our mid block yesterday. You probably noticed, especially in the first half, Steur was man-marking Wirtz, but Miley also had man-marking duties on Szobo as well. Not quite as aggressively because Szobo was allowed time on the ball outside of the block. 1/ #NUFC
