Was watching a YT video earlier on Wirtz and saw this viz. I see this and immediately think “god he works hard off the ball” but Steur does move so much when #NUFC have possession, to create different passing angles and move the opposition around. Think this is a testament to his all round game.

CONTROLLED CHAOS My first long-read is out. On Newcastle United 2.0: analysis of the start to the season, the intelligence of Sean Steur and Nico Gonzalez, Joe Willock’s resurgence, Rory Finneran at Notts County and a bit of vibe scouting on Martin Baturina. Enjoy! 🔗👇 #NUFC

So the first half of this weekend's game provided a bit more clarity about #NUFC 's intentions with the ball - which was welcome. One thing that has become a repeated pattern is the use of the half space across from either wing by both Winger & Full Backs.

We learnt a lot about Steur’s character yesterday. 18 yrs old and mad a huge error. He regathers himself, played the rest of the game making 4 progressive passes, 2 passes into pen area and 1 shot assist. To be this positive with the ⚽️ after a mistake at 18 is very encouraging. #nufc

This is a learning opportunity for this young team and manager. We have to improve but we are in a good position to do so. #NUFC

One aspect of Willock’s game, which is hugely underrated, is his strength. For me, this is partly the reason why Jaissle opts for Willock in the "10" because he loves the counter movements between him and Wissa. 1/ #nufc

There’s no excuses for not winning tonight but it’s been pretty obvious that this team is still “a work in progress” We’re conceding way too many shots at the moment. For me that is coming from: #nufc

I remember towards end of last szn when Howe went to a 4-2-3-1. In our low block, he’d still have our 10 dropping into the second line. Jaissle doesn’t do that but I think for the first goal on Saturday we needed Willock covering that space. 1/ #nufc

2k words into my 1st long read of the szn. I’m going to post it at the start of the int break, so I have time to get more content in there. I’m really excited to share this, as this is the first time I’ve done one. I’m going to do a few across the szn, speaking about a host of topics #NUFC related.

Some interesting tactical details in our mid block yesterday. You probably noticed, especially in the first half, Steur was man-marking Wirtz, but Miley also had man-marking duties on Szobo as well. Not quite as aggressively because Szobo was allowed time on the ball outside of the block. 1/ #NUFC

Not sure how I’ve never came across this before or whether this is the first year but I just bought this and it’s wicked. For a 21 year old with a TikTok attention span, I’ve been reading this for an hour and half straight. That says a lot about how good it is.

The aim of Jaissle's 4-4-2 mid block. It's all about waiting for a pressing trigger, block space and stay compact until a trigger is noticed. In this instance, it's a misplaced pass from Tarkowski, meaning Keane has to take an extra touch. 1/ #nufc

I’m feeling confident about Wissa this season. I’ve been very impressed by his movement in the box, constantly gets himself into goal scoring positions but the finish has lacked. He shown in the WC with sharpness and game time he can be effective. 1/ #nufc

Whether it comes as a surprise or not Howe will “stay predictable”. Tactical intentions remain exactly the same. Howe’s response to last szn is by sticking. Consistent and clear messaging to his new and previous players how he wants to play. Not uncommon for top gaffers to do this either. #nufc

Just the 3 deals for Villa in the week then. I know they're getting money for Tielemans, Digne and probably big money for Rogers and they have to hope Manzambi is a hit but they're moving with the purposed we'd hoped from #NUFC post Tonali/Gordon WC is basically over now, time for speed.

So Sean Steur is joining #NUFC on a 5-year deal apparently, for about 23m GBP. Sean Steur 🔴 is an 18-year-old Dutch ball-carrying central midfielder. He's both-footed, 183 cm tall, and a top talent in the Netherlands. Here he is vs. Tonali 🔵 with the caveat about league strength. 1/ 🧵

Very good cameo from Elanga, that. Was put into a lot of situations which suited him, and he showed his quality. Big season for him coming up. Make or break for his future at Newcastle.

It was interesting how a move on England's right-hand side developed through the game. A move which played a big part in multiple goals. 🧵 It started with Croatia's first goal. Konsa gives it wide to James, who would continuously be under pressure in these scenarios. 1/

There is definitely more to come from Wissa if he stays at #nufc We paid too much & then he got injured pretty badly, but he’s scored nearly 50 epl goals without being a penalty taker. If he sticks around then I hope he repays some of that outsized fee.

It says a lot about the priorities of PL sides nowadays where a coach like RDZ is prioritising Tonali other a more technical midfielder.

Jake Armstrong @jakearmstrong.bsky.social · 15/06/2026
Can't really wrap my head around the teams linked with Tonali. Very luxurious for Arsenal. For a Maresca + RDZ side, I don't think Tonali's technical ability is good enough. There is so much noise around him, though. I expect him to leave, but I'd be surprised if it's any of them. #nufc

Jaouen is a very interesting buy. No experience in a top league and his shot stopping numbers look poor. On the face of it, it’s a big risk for the fee. Seems like an Osula type signing in the fact we are paying for a profile of player. 1/ #nufc
