Not exactly sure what motivated me but I got Houellebecq’s “Submission”. I have memories of “Whatever” from high school. Wouldn’t necessarily call them fond but I have memories. I remember using it in an essay and thinking I was the hottest shit for referencing French lit in HS.

The reason why this feels funky to own in Hungarian is because it's like a glimps into this parallel universe where communism ended. You have Xi's signature, a full colour photo and everything. It's exactly like the Lenin volumes I own from the 70s.

Regarding the "extinction" of Hungarian pulp fiction between 1942 and 1948, it's interesting how the only author to have survived in the public consciousness is Jenő Rejtő, and I'm kinda getting hazy memories of being forced to read him in HS.

Grób’s book is very good for what it is, but his own admitted subjectivity and quite frankly lowbrow boomer emotionality and contrarianism aimed at owning academia at large does a great disservice to the readability of the book.

He obviously went to great lengths to acquire all these out of print works for his research but he just keeps using "???" and writing in a melodramatic style blaming the communists for the death of Hungarian pulp fiction
