Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 19/05/2026Biggest complaint seems to be that the bibliography is a bit messy. But otherwise I got commended for writing in an excellent style on a good topic and producing a valuable appendix. 000
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 14/05/2026Also got this one. "Anatomy of the Detective Story". I'm not expecting much from it, considering the milieu it was written in, but it could still contain a few interesting bits of information. 000

Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 12/05/2026The reason why this feels funky to own in Hungarian is because it's like a glimps into this parallel universe where communism ended. Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026But it's probably the only Hungarian pulp-related question I want answered right now, and I'm 100% getting to the bottom of it. 000
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026I'm reasonably sure that this entire question is answered by Hungarian literary historians in some article or book, but based on the information I have rn I just don't know why Rejtő survived this literary deluge. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026I remember a councilor telling me in elementary school that I'm gonna love reading Rejtő when I become a teenager, but I never really did. I mean, he was right that I'm fundamentally unserious in a way, but in the end I fell in love with Karinthy, and not Rejtő. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Honestly he is one of those authors old people who never really got into literature would read and hold up as an example of "Noble pulp". Like yeah, Rejtő is good. But the fact that he was taught in HS seems to signal that his reputation was sort of elevated after 1991. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026But I can't exactly tell why his work was allowed to exist under Kádár's culture policy while other pulp writers were obliterated. Maybe he *is* just better in some way, but I don't exactly see the justification in my mental eye rn. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Regarding the "extinction" of Hungarian pulp fiction between 1942 and 1948, it's interesting how the only author to have survived in the public consciousness is Jenő Rejtő, and I'm kinda getting hazy memories of being forced to read him in HS. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026But I’m definitely going to use it and 1-2 other texts to write a short article on Hungarian crime fiction in the 30s and 40s. Just as a curiosity. 000
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026It kinda feels like this is just an intro text to his multi-volume series titled “A pictoral bibliography of Hungarian pulp fiction”. Which I might try to read but this is such a tangential excursion that I don’t think I will go through like a thousand pages about pulp fiction. 000
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Grób’s book is very good for what it is, but his own admitted subjectivity and quite frankly lowbrow boomer emotionality and contrarianism aimed at owning academia at large does a great disservice to the readability of the book. 120
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026These are so nice. Last time I had someone draw a portrait of me was in high school, and to this day I cherish it, even if I no longer look like that at all. 010
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026I think I will definitely expand on this in an article in the coming weeks. 000
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Hungarian authors would rather opt to set their stories in England, the US, France, or the colonies of those nations. They would write under an English or a French pseudonym and then maybe bill themselves as mere translators. (Of works that never existed in english or french.) 110
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026The author himself says as much that the genre was and remains something pioneered by "Anglo-saxons" and "to a lesser degree, the French". But there seems to be not even an attempt at creating a Hungarian Sherlock. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Reading about China and Japan, even if they started out writing blatant Sherlock and Lupin copies, they pretty quickly started setting the stories in Tokyo and Shanghai. It seems like, Hungarian authors never really attempted a "Sherlock in Budapest" story in the 30s. 100
Jakabfy Károly (康明智) @jakabfik.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Still going through the book about Hungarian detective novels, and I think the most shocking part is how "the detective novel", despite existing for close to 20 years in Hungary, gained no "national character" or "form". 100
