Surprised at the proximity of souvenir vendors and street hawkers inside temple grounds. Felt tacky

No one wears rain jackets since it's too hot and humid. Foldable umbrellas, which double as parasols, are the way

It's very silly, but I did miss having English tea, and it's very hard to find. Had to make do with the milk tea bottles they have everywhere

Bus drivers have headset mics on with a PA and individually thank everyone when they pay. In Japan, the bus driver thanks you!

The way you use buses depends on the city. Kyoto and Nikko: enter from the back, leave from the front, pay when you get off Tokyo: enter from the front, exit from the back, pay when you get on

A lot of TV shows, even the news, seems to be structured like a magazine show

jai_ /// जय @jai.moe · 05/10/2026
This was especially noticeable in Kyoto, but most cities are built in valleys, since the country is like 90% mountain, so you get very cool cityscapes of flat roads leading to endless rows of hills on the horizon in every direction which you don't really see here

Onsens are nice. We should have that here

DonKi is overwhelming in a good way, but not good when you are fresh off a 13 hour flight

Basically no one is a vegetarian, which is funny for a country that used to be very Buddhist. Would have expected the culinary culture to have persistent somehow

All the buildings make use of vertical space well. Each building on a shopping street has at least 5 floors, with each floor being its own business. A lot of traipsing up stairs and opening anonymous doors to see if you found the right place
100
jai_ /// जय @jai.moe · 05/10/2026
I'm amazed at the single purpose shopping streets. I went to Kappabashi and it's just one massive street with every shop selling kitchenware and restaurant supplies (I bought a knife)

The consistency of the convenience stores is very cool. I wish more of them had their own branded socks so I can collect them all

A lot of chain stores also have their own jingles. Donki is the most famous, but also FamiMart, HardOff, BookOff, Daiso
100
jai_ /// जय @jai.moe · 05/10/2026
Train lines have their own jingle, which plays when a train arrives and departs. This is either very charming or extremely irritating depending on who you are

The IC card system is incredible. Each city seems to have their own Oyster card, which is interoperable nationally, for all public transport, and also serves as a general payment method (can use it to pay at a lot of shops and vending machines)

Learning that I can't have "ok boomer" in my alcohol advertising: www.asa.org.uk/advice-onlin...
Screenshot from https://www.asa.org.uk/advice-online/alcohol-the-young.html

Text reads:

Humour

Humour is acceptable but it must not be of a type typically associated with children or teenagers. That almost certainly rules out, for example, practical jokes, slapstick comedy, sexual humour (Stiffy Shots Ltd, 21 January 2004 and Beverage Brands, 22 September 2004), outwitting authority, ignoring responsibilities, ''generation gap'' references, puerile behaviour (Beverage Brands, 9 June 2004) and anything linked to youth culture. Juvenile or adolescent behaviour is also problematic (even in an ad where the individual playing a significant role is not drinking) – in 2016, the ASA concluded that a social media star jumping into a pool onto an inflatable would be classed as “juvenile” behaviour, and the ad therefore breached the Code (Global Brands Ltd, 26 October 2016). See also Alcohol: Juvenile or adolescent behaviour.

Finding out why Geoff Keighley is in love with Video Game Oscars as a concept
A screenshot of the Wikipedia article for Geoff Keighley. It reads

Geoff Keighley was born on June 24, 1978, to Patricia and David Keighley (1948–2025).He grew up in suburban Toronto with his two siblings, Chris and Jennifer. Keighley's parents were executives at IMAX Corporation, which came with membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; his father was the company's first chief quality officer.
