Important critical lacuna in the dialogue about SWs in libraries NAMELY (1) we don't have evidence it decreases social exclusion or increases inclusion (2) its not a solution which arises from patron demand/interest (3) it introduces new privacy concerns and risks reinforcing marginalizing policies

This article makes valuable points, but I will never forget the relief I saw on a circulation worker's face when she realized that a social worker in the space would mean she wasn't the primary person on call the next time someone ODed in the library bathroom.

No Soft Cops, No Saviours: Abolitionist Notes Against Social Work in Libraries by @gossippractice.bsky.social
In this article, I look at the idea of hiring social workers into public libraries through the lens of abolitionist librarianship. Often presented as an obvious answer to make libraries more inclusive, there is little evidence within the published literature that this model is more effective than others. I argue that rather than expanding care and support for patrons, this model replicates dynamics of soft carcerality and saviourism within our organizations. Using principles of police abolition as my theoretical grounding, I offer alternative models and fields that we can instead draw on as we work toward more inclusive and liberatory public libraries.

Reminding everyone that we are currently open to new submissions by reposting this 2013 classic Killing Sir Walter Scott: A Philosophical Exploration of Weeding by Laura Raphael www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org/2013/killing...
Weeding a library collection, while an absolutely essential part of collection management, is a much more complex issue than library literature—and library practitioners—would like to admit. It is not just an intellectual and physical process but an emotional one, wedded to deep psychological, cultural, and even metaphysical issues. This article explores some of the reasons why weeding can be so heartbreaking, difficult, and miserable.

Librarians, archivists, scholars, publishers, USians: The US House of Representatives passed a bill (HR 6028) which would move the Copyright Office from the Library of Congress/legislative branch to the executive branch. Contact your senators to vote against! www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...
Background The house passed a bill, HR 6028, which would, if passed in the Senate, remove copyright from LC (Library of Congress) and the legislative branch. This would not only be catastrophic for LC but all libraries. It would open the door for Al companies to absorb all works, especially unpublished works that the public doesn't have access to. What Can We Do About It? Call your representatives now. If you're not sure what to say, below is a script you may use. Script My name is [insert name] and I live in [insert location]. I am deeply concerned about the potentially devastating effects of HR 6028, the Legislative Branch Agencies Clarification Act, on the Library of Congress and copyright protections for the American people. I would like to hear the senator's response to three questions: How will H.R. 6028 impact the collections of the Library of Congress, which currently depend on deposit from the Copyright Office? How will H.R. 6028 impact copyright protections for the American people? What is the justification for placing a traditionally legislative body under the power of the executive branch?
