“It’s not perfect – but at least it starts a conversation.” I used to buy that. But I’m disillusioned by how often it justifies tools we know are flawed (MBTI and dead-end engagement surveys, I’m looking at you). What if, instead of bending around bad tools, we asked better questions?

How safe people feel when sharing feedback or co-creating solutions is pivotal to the success of any participatory process. We generally only engage to the degree that we feel safe to.

What if psychological safety starts when things get uncomfortable? Often the real learning begins when we hear something we’d rather not. As Lars Axelsson said: “A problem that stays with whoever discovers it, is a problem that remains unknown.” How can we stay curious, even when it’s hard?

The “I’m ok, you’re ok” model reminds us that, even in disagreement, we can stay grounded in respect. Too often, when challenged, we: ⬇️ Push the other person down(“They’re wrong”), or ⬇️ Push ourselves down (“I’ve messed up”). Neither helps. "I'm ok, you're ok," can keep us steady in discomfort.
An "I'm ok, you're ok" quadrant, where only the square representing the health I',m ok, you're ok state is green. The rest are red.

We often hear (and probably say) “create psychological safety” which, of course, you can’t “do” for anyone else. It’s a shorthand for what we can do: create the conditions which we believe are most likely to help people to feel psychologically safe. But that takes a bit longer, to say and to do 😅

This is how Trump would react to Jesus himself. He’d hate him.
Trump’s late night ramblings on Truth Social “‘The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people.
Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!’

Came across this in James Rebanks’ brilliant book ‘English Pastoral’ and I love it. A good reminder to value the things that help us diversify our skills, increase the range of what we can do and resist the temptation to only “specialise”.
Photo of an extract from the book that reads: “I think it is fatal to specialize. And all kinds of things show us that, and that the more diverse we are in what we can do, the better.”
