Genuinely incredible news. People tend to be reactionary. I see so many people who just want to throw people using drugs in jail, no thought to the past nor the future. This was one of my central policy areas, since it interacts with homelessness. Prescription is the only way forward. #yeg

The only reason I know of Michaelmas is because of Bleak House, and that's also one reason I hate that study that uses the text to decry the literacy standards of undergrads. If the second word in your study text causes the reader to trip up due to lack of historical context, maybe don't use it.

I think it's got to be cognitive overload at some point. Just too much to keep track of that's why we need to build density where cars aren't needed. Increasing density around car-centric infrastructure just increases the cognitive load

Also, there's no fucking point to arguing about it with them. There's no point to doom posting about the effects because it only hurts you. If that was going to convince them, it would have already. That's why I advocate for pivoting the discussion to the positive effects of clean energy.

People recommended the K1000 for the same reason, but I actually like the K1000. Not at the asking price, but it's a perfectly cromulent camera. I just don't like that era of Canon consumer SLRs either. Feels bad in the hand, like the Minolta 7000 series.

The majority of the best 35mm cameras I own were under $250 CAD for me to purchase. That's $175 USD. I got my second F2 for $200. I got my F100 for $85! I can't imagine paying the asking price for an AE-1, nor continuing to use it when there are so many good deals out there.

On the bench today, I just finished working on this Pentax LX, the later edition with the special wood grip. It had the shutter dial oxidation issue, but now it's working great. Great looking camera with the wood accents. #believeinfilm

Yeah, I've tried it too. Rawtherapee isn't bad, although I find that it and Darktable tend to prefer customizability over efficiency. If I've got a few thousand client images to sort and process, neither software is efficient enough for my use case, unfortunately.

Had the Nikon lens, so I just used a cheap adapter. Doesn't autofocus, but that doesn't matter since I'm locking in the focus at the grain anyway. I put a piece of qtip in the stop down lever to keep the aperture open a bit. Jank, but it works!

Ah! Not too different from mine Definitely get some like cardboard or something to get rid of the excess light. At that distance it reflects a bunch into the lens. A 1:1 macro is so good though, makes such a difference

Everything I didn't like about the 5Dii has been fixed, and everything I loved has been kept. I never should have swapped away from the 5D range to the d850. The mirrorless systems never quite match what I want. If something gives you everything you want, stick with it.

But then, that ancient, busted camera immediately took the photos I wanted. It had the exact quality and colour I wanted, and I stopped bothering with so much else. The first photos out of this 5D mark iii have the exact same feeling for me.

And then I bought a 5D mark ii for $150 CAD that was for parts or repair. It had a shutter error, but I suspected the shutter hadn't failed. I learned so much tearing that camera down to the mirror box, three or four times until i got it right, and got the sensor back to focus.

I had been taking photos for a while, mostly with various mirrorless systems, but I was never satisfied with the quality. I kept chasing, because it was never right. "Maybe a full frame will make it work," I would think, but the Sony A7ii didn't fit the bill.

I grew up with a plum tree in our backyard, it was lovely I learned a few years ago that we here in Alberta have the highest quality soil for agriculture, comparable to Ukraine, which is partly why we have so many Ukranian folks

I'll second that. Although, if you're trying to replicate a film look digitally, using vintage lenses help The other way around, I found that the modern Voigtlander lenses rendered too much contrast on film

Is literacy perceived as unnecessary? Is it seen as outdated when you can get podcasts and videos about anything you want to know? I might suggest that it's another reaction from the patriarchy, where literacy is now associated with femininity, or non-masculinity. Effete, scholarly, elitist.

I also saw someone suggest that people aren't reading "quality" fiction, but I think the issue more broadly stems from a lack of reading at all. I suspect it's like XKCD 2501, the average familiarity of readers fails to recognize those who do not read at all.

I've seen some suggestions that we need to improve education, but that doesn't account for people who have already graduated letting their literacy skills degrade. I do not think film, games, videos, or audiobooks develop critical reading skills the same way as text on a page.
