To the Woman I Never Knew
2026-10-01

In the dead of winter
Under the cold winter sun,
There you were, sitting
in the road.

The ice, seemingly everpresent
Had taken your feet by surprise
And it was finally too much to bear
Collapsed, weeping (as I am now).

My mother raised me to care
My dad, to be good in an emergency.
So we sat and chatted
As you calmed down.

While you were sick, you turned to hobbies
That kept you indoors, away from the ice.
But I could tell you were not happy
To be away from your life.

The summer ahead was exciting;
Finally, to be well enough that you
Could return to the river
And go kayaking, swimming, running.
Like so many here in our city
The Wild called to you.

You made it to summer
But only just.

Only this morning, did I find
Your obituary, months long past
When you had died on
The third of July.

You were walking to the ambulance,
When you turned and rushed over
To give me your phone number
So we could one day go for a walk.

Never before has someone expressed
An interest (like that) in me.
I’ve never seen anyone else’s eyes
Look at me (like that).

A couple short texts back and forth.
We were very different people.
But the what-ifs and potentials
Linger in the back of my mind.

The large cross on your neck
Your faith engraved on your body
I wish I believed, sometimes
Although I cannot.

I’m sorry I can’t remember you
As beautiful as I’m sure you were.
All I can do is remember you
As I first saw—bloated by the chemo
The ravages of surgery like the river
Carrying you downstream.

On the bench today, I just finished working on this Pentax LX, the later edition with the special wood grip. It had the shutter dial oxidation issue, but now it's working great. Great looking camera with the wood accents. #believeinfilm

Ah! Not too different from mine Definitely get some like cardboard or something to get rid of the excess light. At that distance it reflects a bunch into the lens. A 1:1 macro is so good though, makes such a difference

Finally got the 3D printed parts needed to get my Pentax LX correctly focused. The STL file on iFixit is great for dialing the infinity focus point. I've started a roll with it and it's fantastic in the hand. #believeinfilm #pentax
