They charged her $450, but they gave her most of a working $450 camera, and then they were left with most of her camera, which was a broken camera. That doesn't seem like a good scam!

They are both 60s/70s models with light meters, with only cosmetic differences in the design...if the woman's camera was especially valuable for some reason, why they give her a different camera but with the top plate from the first one?

Mystified by this story. A woman brought her vintage Rolleiflex into a camera shop for repair and they replaced it with...a different, working vintage Rolleiflex? Why would they do that? Story claims it's "cheaper" - why would it be cheaper? www.reddit.com/r/AnalogComm...

According to Sec. Duffy, bike lanes are DEI. But according to my neighborhood facebook groups, the only people who want bike lanes are "transplants". (they also think bus lanes are due to transplants. Who do they think takes the bus?)

This is basically what seeing a performing artist is - yeah a robot can or soon will be able to do it better, but we still like to hear somebody scratch away at Vivaldi or whatever, in person. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/o...
It’s the same thing as if your child draws you a crayon picture for your birthday, and even if a robot might do something nicer or it might be that you could download a nicer picture from the internet in some objective sense, it still means a lot more to you precisely because the child chose to do it and put effort into it. So that gives the child a reason to put this effort into it. Beyond that, all kinds of spiritual pursuits and a relationship to values.

yes, well put. Yeah the part about his persona being sort of invented on the spot as an afterthought, and then he stuck with it all those years, is revelatory to me, that's wild.

This I would like to read about in the book. There are many degrees of appropriators, there's white guys who say "i invented this", then the ones who benefit but say "I didn't invent it and I owe it all to them" and then those who don't benefit at all and give kudos...He's somewhere in middle.

oh, agree 100%. I would only add that it's a rich conversation to be had, which should really be had with the creators in New Orleans...did they feel like he ripped them off? Was he good for their careers or a mixed bag? sideman gigs, gigs of their own, writing credits, producing credits (cont)

also, if you grew up in that environment, and were a talented young white piano player, are you supposed to *not* imitate Professor Longhair and James Booker?
110
Jacob Garchik @jacobgarchik.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
as to the appropriation conversation, I want to read the book, but my sense is Dr John gave credit where it was due, and brought awareness of Longhair and others to mainstream America. That's gotta be worth something, no?

Don Alias claimed he learned the beat from Gene Perla. I emailed Perla but got no response so far...but yeah, it seems like, the Meters and Dr John were hip and new, so Miles was willing to riff on that in the studio. I think the Meters tune was a 1968 jukebox single too.

Jacob Garchik @jacobgarchik.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
the legend of the tune is this: They already played a faster, non NOLA version of the tune before the went into the studio, with Jack on drums, and Don Alias was hired to play percussion, but he suggested the beat and played it on drums. They (harvey brooks I think?) worked out a NOLA bassline

Such a great article! relatedly - working on writing about Don Alias's NOLA beat on "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" which bears some resemblence to "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya" as well as Working on a Coal Mine and Sophisticated Sissy. Possible he or Gene Perla were inspired by those?
