Particularly strange given that direction is a strong point of Series 7, even (and maybe especially) on the otherwise weak episodes. A Town Called Mercy is downright cinematic.

With all love and respect to the original designers, I would be all over Battles in Time if it weren’t for the unattractive card format. They’re simply not nice-looking objects in the way Magic: The Gathering or Pokémon cards are.

Yes, but the problem isn't 'safeguards', it's the underlying philosophy that it assembles a database of all of us, on the off-chance someone on there commits a crime later. It doesn't prevent or investigate crime. Let's just skip to the 'Flock sued to oblivion' stage, and save ourselves two years.

I feel as though Marvel villains in general avoid direct confrontation if they don’t clearly outclass the hero (Leader, Zemo, Thor 1 Loki). Most actual fights feature the hero as the apparent underdog, unless it’s an in inconsequential fight toward the start of the film (Batroc, for instance).

He’s returning for a run of Big Finish stories next year. I don’t think Tennant returning is a good idea nor is it likely, but he generally seems game to do Doctor Who stuff so I’m not sure his desire is the disqualifying factor.

Having seen the film (more or less by accident, story for another day), while it wasn’t great, I honestly do not think more adult scenes would have helped. The best scenes, and the ones I wish had been expanded, had very little to do with those adult situations. I think Gluck made the right call.

There are preschoolers older than generative LLMs. I recognize that there will always be people who support this tech more than I do, but I will never understand treating it as though we’ve always needed it.

I can’t find any evidence of signed Duggan cards posted online, but I remember reading that McGann was sent an early copy of his card to approve the rendition of his likeness, so - if that story is true and represents standard practice - Chadbon likely saw the card, at least.

I’d be shocked if this ends up being surpassed as my favorite Big Finish release of 2026. I’m tempted to say it’s my favorite Big Finish in years, until I remember the home runs of last year (Hooklight, Dark Gallifrey: Missy) - but that temptation remains given that The Meddling Monks (1/2)

I think it’s something to do with the fact that film more obviously evolves as a medium. A 2020s film looks incredibly different from a 1950s film, so it makes sense that people become interested in “what would this film look like if it was made today?” Not defending the practice, but I do get it.

It remains strange and disturbing to me not only how AI is invading human spaces, but how a vocal portion of the population seems to believe that things we did just fine for decades and centuries before AI have now, in the span of only three years, become impossible to do without it.

More seriously, I don’t write to have written. I write because there are things in my head and getting them out gives me more dopamine than anything else. Life is unbearable if I don’t do the thing, and even if AI actually worked, it wouldn’t do the thing.

Probably doesn’t help that the first book had the least amount of material cut for the film, so we’re starting with the most redundant bits.

We’ve had three Spider-Man and Superman film franchises in that time, sure, but comic adaptations are different because they aren’t just re-adapting the *one* same storyline over and over. Harry Potter is one definitive tale with one beginning and one end. This is a multibillion dollar retread.

Jacob Taylor @jacob-taylor.bsky.social · 25/03/2026
I feel very strangely about this. On the one hand, I’ve always believed that TV is theoretically a better format for an adaptation of HP. On the other hand… the movies were so well done and were so recent. Watching the trailer made this whole exercise feel pointless. It’s just Harry Potter “again.”

Is there a world where, actually, all you need for consciousness is information processing, and it turns out *most* technology is conscious to some degree? Sure, I guess… but I’d need some strong evidence to even start considering that. This skeet might as well be asking us to disprove leprechauns.

“Challenge for those who are very confident that generating a Minecraft world isn’t the same thing as starting a new universe: Explain how the universe even exists.” This just doesn’t seem like a very compelling argument.

Jacob Taylor @jacob-taylor.bsky.social · 07/03/2026
Maybe this is a simplistic perspective, but the very fact that we *know* how these systems work, yet can’t explain how human consciousness works (the very premise of this skeet), seems to be itself a basic argument that LLMs are incomparable to human consciousness.

Author and filmmaker Justine Bateman on generative AI
"They're trying to convince people they can't do the things they've been doing easily for years - to write emails, to write a presentation. Your daughter wants you to make up a bedtime story about puppies - to write that for you." We will get to the point, she says with a grim laugh, "that you will essentially become just a skin bag of organs and bones, nothing else. You won't know anything and you will be told repeatedly that you can't do it, which is the opposite of what life has to offer. Capitulating all kinds of decisions like where to go on vacation, what to wear today, who to date, what to eat.
People are already doing this. You won't have to process grief, because you'll have uploaded photos and voice messages from your mother who just died, and then she can talk to you via AI video call every day. One of the ways it's going to destroy humans, long before there's a nuclear disaster, is going to be the emotional hollowing-out of people." - author and filmmaker Justine Bateman from a piece by Emine Saner for the Guardian

If you want to write heroes in the year 2025, you have to decide what they stand for, and then stand for it. The mealy-mouthed, offend-no-one approach no longer works. People respond to the Walter Whites bc you can put truth in their mouths. So put truth in the mouths of the good guys.

This is 67 cases--a tiny fraction of TB's global burden, which exceeds 10,000,000 active cases per year. But the longer we allow a curable illness to infect and kill millions, the more TB we'll see in the U.S. Tuberculosis is an airborne disease, and TB anywhere is a threat to humans everywhere.
