Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 07/09/2026You know I'm cool because I actually used to live here 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Not sure what the thinking was but Sam fender would have been a perfect opener for Bon Jovi. James Bay kinda sucks. 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 03/09/2026It's September. Those are mince pies. At least celebrate my birthday first, it's a major holiday before Christmas 🎃 010
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 14/06/2026Alongside new data on preprint growth, usage, evaluation, policy developments and future directions, the report argues that advocacy efforts need to refocus on meeting researchers where they are and addressing the concerns that continue to hold adoption back. 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 14/04/2026It's out! Perhaps one of the op-eds that has made me most nervous releasing. Taking Richard Poynders arguments as to why OA failed, I apply these to the preprint movement. scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2026/04/14/g... 021
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 26/03/2026And stepping back to look at the bigger picture shows that preprints are not an increasing % of the literature - again things look stalled & even decreasing. 100
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 26/03/2026indeed, looking over time for each category shows that most appear to be largely stalled in preprint adoption. This reflects the limitations of advocacy efforts so far & given a significant loss of advocacy and expertise in 2025, this year is definitely one to watch closely. 100
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 26/03/2026But if we look at the numbers, then things are less positive. Pathology may have increased by ~20% but that was only 62 additional preprints. Almost every category is increasing by small actual numbers. Neuroscience was the only category to have >1000 additional preprints v prev year 100
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 26/03/2026If we look at the % change for individual categories, almost all categories are increasing - in some cases by 20%! Again, this looks very positive! (data is change from 2024-2025) 100
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 26/03/2026Is preprinting actually increasing? Both @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social and @medrxivpreprint.bsky.social are increasing but looking at the underlying data reveals a somewhat more concerning picture. 🧵 110
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 21/11/2025Not sure it was meant to be used for mulled wine but still! 130
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 21/11/2025Going to try to get into the festive spirit. Tree is up, dogs stocking is up. Finishing touches to do tomorrow. Christmas music on, mulled wine in preparation. 020
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 19/11/2025Working hard today! Lots of data collection. The analysis pipelines are ready and waiting. Writing/slides are underway. Also have new YouTube videos out earlier this week! #preprints 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 18/10/2025Looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of amazing open science folk in a couple of days in sunny San Diego! @cziscience.bsky.social 140
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 17/09/2025It's official! @ripplingideas.bsky.social is a registered non-profit company in the UK 🎉🎉🎉 We'll be applying for charitable status once we have potential funding committed/secured. 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 03/09/2025I propose a combination of static and dynamic signals. Static are those controllable by the authors, fixed at the point of sharing whereas dynamic are responsive to the community and change over time. Take a look at some potential signals 100

Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 15/04/2025Evidence to the remarkable things being said about me. To note; I don't have a personality disorder, I'm a decent enough scientist and I'm certainly not a sociopath. 210
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 14/04/2025Jessie just chilling out in the peaks. Little timeline cleanse. 050
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 08/04/2025Found my earlier data. Yes, bioRxiv/medRxiv lead to more downloads/views than the other platforms (that we had data for in this initial look). Would love to see @altmetric.com data & more on this www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 220
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 08/04/2025For example I've been looking at the impact of peer review, preLights etc on preprint views. This is an example without any attention but shows a sharp decline after posting and another after publishing, which settles into a fairly constant pattern. *Need to also look at social media post impact 110
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 08/04/2025So, when should you post your @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social preprint relative to journal submission? To get the most benefits, you should post preprints 1 month before journal submission. ~50% of the views your preprint gets in the first year occur within the first month of posting! #preprints 321
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 07/04/2025Indeed, looking at only views within 1 year of posting, we see that 50% of those occur within 1 month, 75% within 6 months. Again, for all immunology preprints on bioRxiv (up to end 2023). 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 07/04/2025My coding skills aren't good enough to do even half of the projects I'd love to do. But thanks to wonderful people like @steveroyle.bsky.social making code public I can at least play around and show my ideas are worth pursuing. Here's an initial play with immunology #preprints 130
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 27/03/2025You would not know this was a labour government would you. They're handing it to Reform on a platter. Utter failures, putting the rich first. 010
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 28/02/2025The irony of this is that Prasad could very well be decribing himself here. He's a grifting opportunist who poses an enormous danger to public health. This article is a great insight into the genuine problems in academia and why reform (the right kind) is desparately overdue. 1133
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 24/02/2025Good to see our call to action for the OS community nice and center stage! 😀 There's still be relative silence (or continued capitulation) in this space which is very disheartening. 010
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 20/01/2025It's a big sad day. So, turn off the TV & step away from the internet. Put your walking boots on, get out in nature, headphones in. We have an excellent episode all about the bonfire that is academic publishing, with some cool fruit fly talk thrown in! Let us distract you! pod.fo/e/29e199 020
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 17/01/2025Love this & highly jealous I didn't write it! This fig in particular highlights things I've been saying & trying ot push organisations into combatting - Research culture & the many issues are directly tied to traditional publishing. Publishing is the lynchpin in improving research culture 0196
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 15/01/2025Loving the new bioRxiv toolbar @richardsever.bsky.social! (can we call it a toolbar still?). Much more prominent and makes the transparency much clearer 🪟 #scipub #preprints 052
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 12/01/2025My job is to be an expert on this, with a life sci focus. My experience is that people justify why any studies are flawed or otherwise not worth recognising. But here are two quick examples, both inserted known errors: 1. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9676667/ 2. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC... 200
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 10/01/2025And for those who have a threads account (even if like me you don't use it) here's how to delete the account. Tolerance & humanity over greed, hate and intolerance any day of the week. 000
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 10/01/2025🎙️ The Preprints in Motion podcast returns on Wednesday (15th Jan)! To celebrate I'm going to share some of my favourite episodes over the next few days in this thread. Let's get started 🧵 551
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025What nudge efforts are you doing or what would you add to this list? 110
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Talk to me! DM's & other routes are always open and I never say no to a chat about preprints, integrity, publishing or research culture. I've also had my share of bad academia experiences & I'm always happy to listen 031
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Once that shiny preprint is up - share across BlueSky & write a cool thread. You might just end up with a cool new collaborator *Other social media sites are available 021
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Instead of spending time discussing & reviewing a published paper that can't be updated, review a preprint & share the discussion with the authors. Say it with me "Preprint Review Club not Journal Club" 011
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Instead of "just" posting a preprint, celebrate it as the published, out in the world, thing that it is. Have a preprint cake party 🎉 011
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Instead of listing the journal names on your CV, just hyperlink to the publication (the open access version, ofc). 🔗 001
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Instead of asking someone "where they're going to submit that great work", instead ask "which preprint server is it OK, as I'd love to read it fully". 📚 021
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025As an individual, you don't need to always speak out or do the big scary things. Small (right) things matter. Nudge efforts can have a great local impact. So, here are some smaller activities you could do, each with a matching Gif, cause they're fun. 🧵 020
Jonny Coates @jacoates.bsky.social · 02/01/2025Choosing the right thing builds character, it enables you to grow & develop. It's hard, but always worthwhile. When enough people choosing the right thing we progress forward, leading to change. And eventually, the right thing becomes easy for others. 011
