You can now update bioRxiv/medRxiv preprints with funding information after the fact. Authors often omit/don't have all funding info when submitting, but funders understandably want it there. This solves the problem without requiring you to submit a whole new paper. openrxiv.org/updating-fun...

Current efforts to develop trust signals; genuine or misguided?
Over the last year, conversations about trust signals have increased. However, there remain many outstanding questions, various levels of implementation or experiments, and a lack of clarity on the purpose of such signals. Historically, the credibility of a research article is judged through the presence of peer review and weak proxies linked to publication venue (such as journal name and…

The qed 1% club controversy highlights a difficult road ahead for openRxiv as they embark on the next decade of trying to bring about a bigger preprint ecosystem. But it also raises questions about the motivations of some open science "advocates"

The 1% club and the rocky road ahead for bioRxiv
The recent launch of qed's "top 1%" preprint ranking has sparked controversy, with concerns about its arbitrary nature, potential harm to authors, and low-quality inclusions. While the tool aims to provide valuable feedback, backlash against qed and its partnership with bioRxiv highlights the challenges and complexities within the evolving preprint landscape and academic community.

The openRxiv Labs announcement is incredibly exciting. Here's why I think so.

The Next Decade of Preprints Needs Experiments, Not Opinions
Lately, I have spent a considerable amount of time writing about my concerns regarding the direction of the preprint ecosystem and the behaviour of some of the actors within it. Increasingly, I worry that preprinting is being pushed toward becoming little more than a replica of the existing scholarly publishing system. For those of us who see preprints as an opportunity for genuine and meaningful change, that would be a profound disaster.

On average, preprints on bioRxiv are posted 255 days before they appear in a journal. That's a huge acceleration of research. Don't forget, ~70% of bioRxiv preprints are eventually published, but just because a preprint may remain a preprint, this does not speak to the quality of the article. 1/3

On bioRxiv, authors can choose which licence to give their preprint. Unfortunately, understanding of what the licences mean is still relatively poor, with most opting for closed licences. But, this appears to be opening up as of 2025, based on bioRxiv data 1/2
