Given who's in charge of the administration; we should take federal reporting with a grain of salt.
At 4.1%, the official unemployment rate is lower than its historical
average of more than 5%, signaling a seemingly steady labor market.
Beneath the surface, however, are signs that it has lost some of its
dynamism.

It’s reflected in current measures of long-term unemployment. The
share of workers who’ve been out of a job for 27 weeks or longer
now stands at 27%, the highest since 2015 outside of the Covid-19
pandemic. The median spell of unemployment lasts about 11 weeks,
and the average is more than six months, suggesting rising levels of
long periods of joblessness. The steady march higher in average
weeks spent unemployed usually occurs only in the wake of
recessions.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to announce
September’s jobs report at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday. Economists
surveyed by Dow Jones estimate the U.S. added 84,000 jobs last
month, with the unemployment rate holding at 4.1%.

MAN. Because for all intentions and purposes, nationally, I'm American as hell (I have no claims to Haitian nationhood that I can invoke without going back there to live for ~6 years): This is the nationality conversation Black immigrants deal with: loss of heritage through migration.
There is also a fascinating legal discussion at the heart of the film about what it means to be a "Haïtien d'origine" and what rights come with that label: whether your grandparents must also be Haitian and whether you must not have ever renounced your citizenship. As someone whose birth certificate reads "PAYSAN ... Née à l'hôpital Justinien. Cap-Haïtien, Haïti," I watched with great intrigue the lengths the duo went through for something I take for granted.

The film's personal, first-person framework naturally calls for a richer exploration of the duo's relationship, and it ultimately suffers from the lack of that context. There are a couple of conversations that feel unfinished and leave us wondering. Throughout "Dual Citizenship," we see a tension between Edouard and Rachelle. There is resentment and strain between the two that the film only touches on at the surface. A deeper dive would have shed some light on what is really driving Edouard, a Trump supporter, to be reluctant but still willing to make this journey to please his daughter, and Rachelle to be so enthusiastic about the sheer possibility of being Haitian on paper, though she already is in almost all other aspects of her life.

Never mind, this is effectively a form of indentured servitude to the MLB. Black Americans wouldn't have to experience this (more protection here in the States) but the view of Caribbean Black people as "the local African body for hire" helps out (see: tourism)
Thanks to early agreements, prestamistas, or moneylenders, like Caraballo now wield singular power within Dominican baseball, amassing millions of dollars by persuading undereducated parents to sign away portions of their sons’ future bonuses in exchange for loans with exorbitant interest rates. Major League Baseball has known for years about early agreements and the predatory industry that has grown around them. Even though it has a formidable economic and political presence in the Dominican Republic, it has done little about either. It has never publicly warned or penalized a team for making an early deal, and its attempts to educate families about moneylenders have been ineffectual. (A spokesperson for Major League Baseball declined to comment and referred to past statements by league officials calling for an overhaul of the Dominican system.)

This felt weird. Did she have to be The One to do this? There's no chance her training data won't end up in some porn corpora no (although Instagram is basically that now)
My friends didn’t think the voice sounded much like mine and thought the likeness was not as good as the personal avatar, but nonetheless it was close enough to be somewhat creepy. My mom called it “amazing,” which is pretty high praise from her. She and my father kept trying to ask it questions “only they would know” about me — but the model didn’t answer, redirecting them each time to the venture fraud story.

“I don’t remember giving birth to two of you,” she joked after testing the model.

Timely as hell by @aworkinglibrary.com: aworkinglibrary.com/writing/an-a...

Hiding grayly behind that sexy rock star, technology, is a much more sinister and powerful figure. It is the entire social system that surrounds us: hence the sense of being at the mercy of an all-encompassing autonomous process that we cannot control. If you add the monster’s location in time (during and after the Industrial Revolution), I think you can see what is being discussed when most people say “technology.” They are politically mystifying a much bigger monster: capitalism in its advanced industrial phase.

Russ, To Write Like a Woman, page 36

This is the same point that Hagen Blix and Ingeborg Glimmer will make, fifty years later, in Why We Fear AI. If there is anything novel about the language of AI (and I’m not convinced there is), it’s not the mystification of capitalism or the threat of a power out of our control or the manner in which technology is used to obscure human choices and human agency. It’s that we seem to have forgotten how to talk about anything else.

LOL this is basically saying let the Rust community deal with the slop monster than is Bun. Wow
The (re)writing was on the wall. Even within a couple days, we already suspected a Rust rewrite was coming. And we were rooting for it! The acquisition by a large AI company was a burden, because even the indirect connection of Claude being written in Bun being written in Zig caused not only a surge of drive by slop contributions, but also an influx of tasteless AI enthusists into Zig communities who had to be informed that it's antisocial to paste LLM output into forum posts. For a moment, I feared Zig's identity would become known colloquially as a programming language associated with AI.

When Jarred announced the Rust rewrite, we were ecstatic. It seemed too good to be true. I have to admit, I didn't think the technology was there, to pull off this stunt. But he did it, and now I'm metaphorically sipping delicious tea from a mug that says "It Tastes Like It's Not My Problem Anymore".

There's a reason why I prefer socializing on @blackskyweb.xyz than other platforms. And given how we've seen legacy (and modern!) media move, we need places that are true to a mission that help Black people. And what helps Black people, helps everyone.
I imagine that Blacksky will be a frontier space in how one aims to build an organic audience around things that they share. They (members of Blacksky's PDS namely) have the advantage of not being restricted to solely the Twitter-like experience of Bluesky: they can lean on long-form publishing (for a Medium-like experience) and eventually video (short- and long-form for a TikTok and YouTube-like experience), making their engagement signals way more accurate, authentic and transparent than what can be provided by Google or Facebook — for free. The benefits for research in digital spaces is huge but also can allow for better guardrails around interaction - my mind is jumping in so many directions thinking about what levers we can enable here. I just hope that folks have and move with stances that are just as generative and look for Black people online to build community with, not just to make money off of them.

There's a lot of money to be made on "analyzing Black traffic" and companies like Spill know this:
As with the difficulty of describing all of those of African ancestry in the United States (partially or otherwise) under a singular umbrella term, the want to describe (enforce?) a (non-)consensual understanding of Blackness on a sub-section of the Internet as this singular entity, one as neatly described as "Black Twitter", has been a desire of folks whose role in the media production functions of society have left them currently without a faucet to tap on when they want to know "what's going on" ever since Twitter's sale to Elon. Threads has benefited from a large density of Black people on the platform automatically having accounts by way of Instagram[2] - a digital equivalent to the benefit that the United States had on its cultural outputs due to its capture of African people from centuries ago and their persistent grasp on preventing a means of legitimate exit (if not disassociation).

It's interesting, though. As much as it's spoken about — we don't see other places having issues like this. Smaller ones, in comparison to places like Threads or Blacksky, don't seem to have this problem. It could be due to the fact that they didn't branch off from other spaces. The most prominent one that I pay attention to is Spill. They managed to secure funds in venture capital of $2 million from Kerry Washington]23 in 2024. Ironically, they're part of the inspiration of my idea of Spadat for AT Protocol. But they're not honest about how they make money literally off their analysis of the slice of digital Black experiences — not to their users, nor do these people who pay the executives get paid out for this, being able to pay back Kerry $0.50 to the dollar of her investment (if they paid it out quick):

According to Spill’s chief growth officer, Kenya Parham, the company projected it would cross $1 million in annualized revenue at the start of 2025 and had surpassed that mark by the end of the third quarter of 2025.

Yes, AI is just software. But it is special in one way: the slick, sycophantic, uncanny valleyness of the way it communicates. Human-like, but not human, which is somehow vastly more alienating than messages that are plainly automated. This is why communication that sounds like AI is so degrading to trust. We all know how easy it is to have the machine spit out some bullshit on our behalf, and we don’t want it done to us.

This means that humans who want to use it for interpersonal interactions will need to work hard to compensate for the loss of trust it engenders. It can be done — it’s not impossible. But it will not work to simply deny this effect and shove AI-generated happy birthdays and performance reviews down everyone’s throats. Not in 2026.
