I always gaslight myself into thinking proofs won’t take all day but they always do. Apparently I temporarily forgot how to spell every word in the English language.

Good work! Looking forward to applying it to all the isolated Permian and Triassic teeth that are out there.

Really cool and important paper, as an enormous part of the fossil record of fishes is isolated teeth. @elizabethsibert.bsky.social academic.oup.com/iob/advance-...

Reminds me of a fish paper draft where I was writing about the anal fin of a fish and mistyped a “u” in place of the “i”. Glad that didn’t make it to reviewers.

The new hall is good for a lot of reasons, but mounting skeletons like this is the best. Highlights that these were living, breathing animals, and makes the exhibit extremely fun and engaging.

I am specifically talking about professional scientists who don’t fully grasp the basics of their science. Not normal people.

I agree, but they were asking about professional scientists.

Students asked today why people subscribe to scientistic racism, transphobia, etc., given how many of these ideas are based on bunk science. I would be interested in people's opinions, but I told them a mix of people not being smart enough to grasp the actual science and profitability.

Should be noted that other sensory experiences with type specimens are not allowed. Although I didn't ask to taste-test the specimen for instance.

Advanced imaging and statistics are great tools but create the same problem. We gravitate towards complicated solutions to simple problems, to the point that some reviewers now seem to think that basic morphological work is 'eye-balling' a specimen. Like yes I did use my eyes, as opposed to what?

I used to think I had it rough doing fish phylogenetics, then I read stuff from people working on single celled organisms. Bacteria had people flat giving up in the 60's, eukaryotes don't seem to be much better. Talk about polytomies!
Eukaryote tree from Adl et al. (2013), so many polytomies
