In another refinery incident there was a circulation pump located just under the white circular vessel you see in this image that failed. From the description of the event and the location, I’d take an estimated guess and say pipeline failure or some sort of flange failure.

The EPA is cool and all as an agency and I get why my company is potentially a bit hesitant to allow open dialog with them but… they’re just a bunch of fellas. The dudes, even. Wader-wearing, rather weird, “I found a cool bug during my inspection of your facility” girlies

Aftermarket solutions to problems that shouldn’t exist is, unfortunately, a familiar process.

Sometimes I have a very specific way I want to say something but I can’t think of the word I need so I use a synonym but it pisses me off internally even though it probably sounds fine to whoever I’m talking to. Probably not relatable at all just thought about my internal dialogue problems smh

Just read the @funranium.bsky.social blog post about the shrimp situation finally and I find myself reminiscing about decontamination procedures. Please do not ever buy elemental mercury. These things are definitely not related in any way. I will not be elaborating on this

This is written for my own benefit as much as anyone else's. It's so that I can have it all in one place and point people at it. It's what the Reference Rants are for. Needless to say, someone is in trouble. Likely several someones.

Yes, I saw the story about the FDA recall of shrimp from Walmart because of Cs-137 contamination. Do I know exactly how this happened? No and it is likely to be a while until we get any definitive ans...

Honestly, props to USA Today for this article. Calling out the sensationalism created by media over the frequency of train derailments by explaining specifically where that number comes from and breaking it down. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

detect these nuts lol but fr you can detect hex chrome at like below half a microgram per cubic meter and it doesn’t really get “dangerous” until you have chronic exposure at something like 0.005 milligrams per cubic meter and the action level is 0.0025 mg/m3 which is 2.5 micrograms/m3

This is my semi-regular reminder that the intention of Prop 65 was to make sure you knew materials were present that should be disposed of in a way that they wouldn't contaminate the groundwater, at which point you increase your odds in the cancer lottery.

Lopezite, a large lab grown specimen of potassium chromate (K2Cr2O7), gifted to me by @fossillocator.bsky.social. Still my all time favorite toxic mineral I own and also by far the largest. It resides in its own glass jar to prevent oxidation as much as possible.
