#OnThisDay in 1861, Charles Darwin wrote to his friend, "But I am very poorly today and very stupid and hate everybody and everything." 📜🧪
Sepia photograph of Charles Darwin in old age, seated in a chair and shown from the waist up in three-quarter profile facing right, against a plain backdrop. He is bald on top with white hair at the sides, a lined forehead, and a long, full white beard. He wears a dark, heavy overcoat with wide lapels over a waistcoat, his hands resting in his lap at the lower right.A line of Charles Darwin's handwriting in brown ink on cream paper, with faint writing showing through from the other side of the page. It reads: "But I am very poorly today & very stupid & hate everybody & everything."

I use a small static site generator written in Clojure that runs via @borkdude.bsky.social’s babashka, which comes with a markdown parser and hiccup (sexp to HTML, like sxml) built in.

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

Brilliant mathematician Emmy Noether was initially barred from teaching at University of Göttingen because she was a woman. She taught for 4 years as a "guest lecturer" under David Hilbert's name. Hilbert, exasperated at the stupidity of the rule: "Gentlemen, this is not a bathing establishment."

In this paper, we develop a formal semantics for the Skia graphics engine(which powers Google Chrome). We use these semantics to prove correct optimizations for Skia. Our optimizer gets average speedups of around 12% over Chrome across the top 100 most-visited websites.

i have decided to set a challenge for myself: one of the dungeon or building interior generators in this should be basically out of the box cellular automata (it's fine to postprocess to a limited extent). one candidate rule: [[0,1,0,0,0], [0,0,2,0,0], [2,1,2,0,0], [1,2,2,1,0], [1,1,1,2,2]]

The takeaway: the next leap in AI will not come from just scaling next-token prediction, but from systems that are agentic, self-referential, and temporally grounded. What do you think is the most important missing ingredient in today's AI systems? Link: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsta/issue/3...

It just occurred to me that I made my first blog-like thing on the Internet (a .plan accessible via finger) in September 1986 — 40 years ago! We had way too much optimism about the disintermediated future, but I miss that optimism now, & those positive visions for equality and individual empowerment

A neat project at work: We built an archive for Lapham's Quarterly as part of its (gradual, ongoing) relaunch—full access if you subscribe. It's been nice to see and read it again. Ping if you find bugs. archive.laphamsquarterly.org (they relaunched temporarily at laphamsquarterly.substack.com).
A PDF viewer showing the cover of Lapham's Quarterly with a trading vessel, and a Greco-Roman sculpture on the next page. Tons of issues above, typical web nav. It's supposed to be a very accessible site but it's tricky working with PDFs so we did the best we could.

The concept of ‘language levels’ from racket is, to me, one of the great unsung ideas in computing. Imagine photoshop with extensible affordances gated to your current skill level, or a coding harness, or R studio, or a browser, or a terminal. To me it would be the welcome anti-philosophy to RTFM

Ok, I’d like your recommendation for long form group writing with access control. Ideally OIDC so we could use atproto. Knowledge base / wiki would be what these things are called. Outline Wiki be an example of an open source option. Compete with commercial offerings like Notion or Confluence.
