A macho culture of performative selfishness might start on the roads, through racing, rolling coal, ever bigger SUVs ... But it doesn't end there. If we want to live in a decent country which values human life, we need to change this culture. My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Driving that’s too fast, too dangerous and utterly lawless: why do we tolerate this petro-masculinity? | George Monbiot
In towns and in the countryside, I see 4x4s and pick up trucks driven without care or consicence. It’s a Magafication of transport, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The UK government ceasing automatically to support almost anything the government of Israel does is a major shift. The next step should be to rescind the ban on #PalestineAction, to stop treating protesters as terrorists, and to acknowledge that those seeking to disrupt a genocide may have a point.

Do yourself a favour, bin big tech, join a decentralised social media, invite your friends, let the dystopian architects in big tech fall by the wayside.

It's truly refreshing to use smaller social media, it feels like the internet of old, niche interests, fewer bots, positive interactions and you feel like you can stop scrolling when you feel like it, you're not doomed to an addictive infinite scroll.

So I've binned Reddit and opted for using Lemmy (the decentralised alternative). I needn't bin twitter as I did that a long time ago and adopted Bluesky. I am slowly migrating all of my email to various other privacy focused emails services such as Protonmail.

It's not just the lack of privacy, big tech algorithms induce rage, depression and addiction. Look at the way these platforms push bad politics on the behest of bad actors who want to dismantle our democracy.

Thankfully the native app store has a cool little feature which tells you how private the app is, and seeing frequent ratings of 0/10 for privacy (blue sky ranks 8/10, not bad) really helps to showcase the major issues with big tech platforms. This has led me to finding alternatives.
Image of the murena os app lounge, showing the Facebook app download page with a 0/10 ranking for privacy.

So I purchased my first Fairphone, opting for the Murena operating system. It has been awkward to start with because some apps don't boot without Google presence on the operating system but all things considered I have had reasonable success with my essentials like messaging apps and browsers.

I have recently been on a bit of an anti big tech kick recently. It was originally spurred on my Gemini being forced onto my android device with no option to actually uninstall. Big tech does not care for consent or device autonomy. Conveniently this overlapped with my phone's end of usability...

Sometimes the extent of the unpreparedness makes you wonder if they're blatantly incompetent or if they just deem it the most economically feasible option to be the widescale deaths of the working and destitute classes.

We do not build the reservoirs needed to store the rain that falls here. We do not build strategic food reserves needed to maintain provision in hard times. We failed to build effective stores of PPE, to protect us in pandemics. This country has long been governed by people who do not prepare.

One of the most damaging ideological victories of the last decade was the now widespread belief that coughing all over other people, wiping your snot on hand rails or not washing your hands after going to the toilet is a heroic exercise of your rights.

A really important message from @chrisgpackham.bsky.social. Church leaders have a moral responsibility to protect the natural world & they have the perfect opportunity to decide to do so on Tuesday - see @wildcard.land for details of how you can add your voice & make sure they do the right thing👇

Surely the accumulation of points would lead to many licence revocations. One thing we really need in the UK is a reduction in drivers.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want any party to treat labour with kid gloves down the line, Burnham would be indebted to third parties and is going to be more sympathetic to concessions for an electoral pact.

Because we're between a rock and a hard place, as problematic as labour has been, neither the Greens (the party I am a member of) nor the Lib Dems will attain enough seats to form the next government. We are influential enough to push labour towards PR and maybe closer ties with the EU.

I would hope that LD and Greens would throw support towards Burnham in exchange for concessions on PR and possibly a tactical alliance at the next GE.

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet. This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.
