Roy Jenkins modernised liberalism for an earlier Britain; civil liberties, Europe, and constitutional reform were his tools for widening freedom. But the political economy has since shifted. Read the full piece on my Substack! #LiberalDemocrats #Liberalism #UKPolitics #Housing #PoliticalEconomy

My latest piece for Bylines Cymru calls for Keir Starmer to NOT stand down amid the Mandelson Scandal. To stand down would be easy; walk away from a broken system that allowed such events to take place. If Starmer is truly apologetic, then he must fix the system to ensure this never happens again.

Starmer should not resign yet – this is a standards crisis
The Mandelson–Epstein row asks a brutal question of Keir Starmer: when judgment fails at the top, what accountability is owed?

Had my first piece for @bylines.cymru recently published, in which I discuss Wales' new voting system, closed listed proportional representation. While we are moving in the right direction, closed lists are not the answer, placing emphasis on choosing parties over individual representatives.

“It’s people helping each other, helping their community, celebrating multiculturalism and sport and cheering on our key workers and I see it every single day in my constituency. “That, to me, is what the British spirit is about. And that’s why I’m proud to be British”

Weird and almost universal revisionism today. Even at the time, it was pretty clear that Mandelson wasn't appointed *despite* his dodgy links but *because* of them. Trump's Washington is a dirty swamp. Mandelson was deemed a man able to swim in it. This wasn't a secret. Everybody said it out loud.

My residents are sick of being let down by Thames Water. The company is dead in the water. The PM should deny the £16 billon rescue deal that is about to cross his desk and establish a public benefit company. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss this further with the Minister.

Scottish Liberal Democrats are clear that Scotland’s NHS needs fresh ideas. We believe the problem lies in the crisis in social care which keeps patients in hospital when they should be home. If we get that right, we can alleviate the pressure on A&E, waiting times and GPs.

I've maintained for a long while that the Starmer project was fundamentally about trying to turn Labour into a centrist-to-centre-right monolith straddling the middle of British politics, in the mould of Macron. And it's working out just as badly as it has for Macron.

The targeting of Fed Chair Jerome Powell is our warning. The Fed must stay independent not because it's perfect, but because once monetary policy becomes political, economic stability collapses. Check out one of my recent Substack articles, along with a video, at the link in my reply.

The answer is to ensure that these kids get a good education and their parents can find well-paying jobs. Welfare reform should not be about pushing people into immediate poverty, it should be about supporting people back into work. www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politic...

The nasty party is well and truly back. Russell Findlay might be happy leaning into the role of the moustache twirling villain but the bottom line is that this policy will push children in many communities into poverty and it must be condemned.

Margaret MacGill has been stuck in hospital for more than 400 days, because the carers she needs just aren’t available. It's now cost the NHS nearly £200,000 to keep her in hospital, when she doesn’t need or want to be there. You cannot fix the NHS without fixing social care.

Permanent mobilisation can feel #radical. #Democracy, in practice, is harder. I’ve written about why #movements without a viable endpoint often fail to deliver change, and how that corrodes #democratic trust. 📖 Why I’m uneasy with permanent mobilisation and what it does to democratic trust.

My new piece, Radical stability and the work of reform, argues that Britain’s problem is not a lack of ideas, but weakened institutions and eroded trust, and that reform only lasts when it is built on competence, restraint, and democratic credibility. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/jackmere...

There is great irony that the man Reform have selected to win Gorton and Denton for them is the same man (in his previous life as a serious academic) who co-wrote a superb book called National Populism that dissects the very same ideas he now promotes.
